Astros to make Sugar Land Skeeters their Class AAA affiliate

The Astros and Sugar Land Skeeters reached an agreement for the Skeeters to become the Astros’ Class AAA affiliate, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Chandler Rome. The Astros also will have an ownership stake in the Skeeters, according to KRIV-TV.

The Skeeters play at the 7,500 seat Constellation Field, located about 20 miles southwest of Minute Maid Park off Highway 6. The team had been playing in the independent Atlantic League since its inception in 2012.

The move means the Astros’ top two affiliates are both in the state with the Corpus Christi Hooks serving as the organization’s Class AA affiliate. The Astros also own the Hooks and the Class A Advanced team in Fayetteville, N.C.

The Round Rock Express now will need to find a new affiliation, which the Dallas Morning News’ Evan Grant speculates could be the Texas Rangers.

I really wish they had timed shrinking the minor league footprint with a major league baseball expansion. It wouldn't hurt quite as much if two new MLB teams needed to establish minor league affiliates. I think MLB expansion to 32 teams is inevitable in the next decade. That should help mitigate some of the losses.

You are correct. But this had to be done with the expiration of the MLB MiLB player development agreement which was September 30. In addition by doing it this way MLB gets to maximize others paying for their capital expenditures by having two rounds of extortion on communities.

looks like the split with the ryans is absolute this time, and i can't be real too shocked by nothin no mo, but i was really stunned that reid ryan was "demoted" (meaning fired) last fall. round rock is a great park and a huge success. the skeeteres park is in a nice White rich area, however, so there's that

This just in: White, rich people go to ballgames. (Or they did, anyway...)

The Round Rock Express were 1st or 2nd in the PCL in attendance each of the last 10 years (first 5 times; Sacramento was first 4 times and Las Vegas once).

3/4 - see the Yankees dropping Trenton for Somerset, in that same vein.

I'm sure that some of the Skeeter business is about the Astros also getting a chunk of the team.
