Athletics To Trade Jorge Mateo To Padres

Long regarded as one of baseball’s more promising prospects due in no small part to his 80-grade speed, Mateo has yet to debut in the Majors. The 25-year-old was a central piece in the trade that sent right-hander Sonny Gray from Oakland to New York, but he hasn’t been afforded a chance in the Majors with either the Yankees or the A’s. He has, however, been on the 40-man roster of both clubs long enough to have exhausted all of his minor league options. In other words, he’ll have to make the Padres’ Opening Day roster or else be designated for assignment.

Mateo was one of several players in the mix for playing time at second base in Oakland, vying with Franklin Barreto, Tony Kemp and Rule 5 pick Vimael Machin for that role. Now in San Diego, he’ll once again be looking up at Jurickson Profar — a former ballyhooed prospect himself — and hoping to find his way into the mix for at-bats. Mateo does have a bit of center field experience as well, having logged 247 innings there back in 2017.

Interesting looking track record the last few years. He showed power at 22 and 24 although 24 was Vegas while at 23 in Nashville he showed no power at all. He used to steal like crazy but has been around 25-10 the last couple of years but does hit 15 triples a year which would be fun. He strikes out way to much for a guy with his speed so it's unlikely he'll hit well enough but if his defense is good, he might have a career.

I think Barreto is (was?) a decent prospect, but man.... two former Cubs who are so spare partish I bet 95% of folks didn’t know they were both Cubs last year?

Situational players might be more valuable than normal this year. Each game effectively counts triple in the standings.

From what I’ve read, the Padres actually plan to use Mateo in CF. It’ll be interesting to see how that goes.

One has to assume that Mateo would be a natural choice for the Padres ghost runner under this year’s stupid extra-inning rules.

How does this make any sense? A game counts as one game.

Despite being hyped prospects for whom the A's traded their best players, ultimately neither Barreto nor Mateo have been good enough to make the A's team. Barreto still has a shot I guess but the Josh Donaldson trade is long lost. The Sonny Gray trade is looking really really bad now too. For all the prospects the A's have acquired in these trades, I can only think of Luzardo and Montas as having panned out.

60 games instead of 162. If you counted every win as 2.7 wins and every loss as 2.7 losses, you'd end up with 162 total.

Or ... suppose you have a bad first week and are 1-5 after the first week. Going 29-25 (537) gets you to 500. Let's say 34 wins probably gets you to the playoffs -- that's 611 ball. If you prefer, the Nats were 13-17 and 4.5 back in the division after 30 games last year. It didn't really get any better at 27-33 and 6.5 back and 6 back of the 2nd WC. They would have had to go 20-10 to tie for the 2nd WC after 60 games.

If you want further convincing, go to a more extreme case like the NFL. Being 3-6 halfway through is a lot worse than being 39-42.Of if you're going to fall behind by even just 1 run, you'd much rather that happened in t1 than t9.

Whether any of that sufficiently impacts the value of situational players is another question. But certainly WPA has a closer relationship to PPA (playoffs p added) this season.

Whaddya know, the Padres traded Margot (to the Rays of all teams) in Feb. For a reliever with some nice numbers. So in addition to like 9 guys for 1B/LF/RF/DH, the Rays have two good defensive CFs.

Anything that happened in the before time has been lost to the fog of time.

well when you put it that way, I can see it.

The Sonny Gray trade is looking really really bad now too.

Is it? The Yankees were disappointed enough with Gray that they straight-up dumped him a year-and-a-half in, so at worst it seems like it’d end up as a push.

Fowler looks pretty marginal, but Kaprielian is finally healthy (for now) and performed well when he was on the mound last year, and we have no idea who the Mateo PTBNL is going to turn out to be.
