ATL Journal-Constitution: Hampton expects return to rotation by next week (RR)

After this season’s over, and Hampton’s contract expires, they can finally throw away this story template.

Hampton hasn’t pitched in a major-league game in 35 months, sidelined by an array of injuries and two elbow surgeries. This year’s ailments: a strained (and re-strained) pectoral muscle and the groin strain, which occurred July 16 in what was to be his final minor-league rehab start.

“Felt really good,” Hampton said after Tuesday’s 35-pitch session. “I threw everything. I didn’t overdo it, threw with pretty good velocity, let a few go.”

He said he would throw another bullpen Friday and hoped to be activated if that session goes smoothly. “I’ve got to test it, go at max effort, then see what they want after that,” he said, adding that he doesn’t need any more rehab games.

Hampton's contract is just awesome. The Braves will pay him $15 million this season, but it's the Rockies who are on the hook for his 2009 buyout at $6 million. Colorado's also still going to have to pay Hampton his signing bonus in 2009, $19 million of which had been deferred since 2001 and appreciating at 3% annually, payments being metted out over the next nine years.

Right about now, the Rockies are probably wishing the schools in metro Denver weren't quite so good.

This is great news for the Braves. I assume they will start Hampton in RF, and send the brat back to Mississippi.

adding that he doesn’t need any more rehab games

Says who? I say make him prove he's wildly effective in a continuous string of rehab starts before even thinking of bringing him up.

Pitching has not been the problem for the braves this year anyway. Why take a chance that he eats through the bullpen after getting hurt warming up again?

Is it legal to have the training staff on the field, standing right next to him on the mound?

Hampton still has a chance to outperform his ZiPS innings projection! I won't hold my breath.

Well, he has 27 IP in rehab starts... that passes his optimistic projection... let's run his numbers through zMLE quick (can't do rookie league GCL Braves, 5.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K; so skipping that)...

zMLE: 1-0, 3.86 ERA, 6 G, 6 GS, 21 IP, 23 H, 9 ER, 2 HR, 4 BB, 18 K
ZiPS: 1-1, 3.71 ERA, 3 G, 3 GS, 17 IP, 18 H, 7 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 7 K

He's on quota.

No, that would require Mike Hampton to start against Carl Pavano with both pitching complete games.

Oh, and my bet for Hampton's next problem, feline leukemia.

I saw a TV ad for some drug for "restless leg syndrome". Among the many side effects it warned you about were incontinence, "sexual side effects", and falling asleep while driving. I know they just throw those things in there to avoid certain lawsuits, but man, my restless leg syndrome would have to be pretty malignant for me to want to risk all of that.

Every time they needed a spot on the 40-man roster, they had someone they knew were done for the year, so they didn't need it.
