Atlanta Braves overcome ‘ups and downs’ to clinch fourth straight NL East title

he Atlanta Braves have done it all before—many, many times before—but this one felt a bit different.

More satisfying, for sure.

After all, the Braves floundered under .500 much of the season. They endured devastating injuries and grim legal issues. They had to essentially rebuild their outfield at the trade deadline.

And yet, there they were Thursday night, swigging champagne, puffing on cigars and celebrating an NL East championship.

Ian Anderson turned in another dominant pitching performance, Jorge Soler and Austin Riley homered to power the offense, and the Braves clinched their fourth straight division title by completing a sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies with a 5-3 victory.

“We were just trying to hang in there and pull this thing off,” manager Brian Snitker said. “It’s unbelievable what these guys accomplished with everything we went through.”

Also, the Mets fell apart, and the Phillies couldn't get over the hump. In this three game sweep, Realmuto and Harper had one hit between them.

Braves have had bad injury luck this year (Acuna and Soroka, plus Fried missing time and Ozuna's troubles), but have played resiliently.

Alex Anthopoulos has put together a pretty good record as GM between his work in ATL and TOR.

No kidding; that is 4 east titles in a row for Atlanta, and I would call them a mid-range payroll team.

What he did at the trade deadline as remarkable. Lose your #1 and #3 hitter, so what do you do? Get 4 new outfielders and a bullpen piece for basically dreck from the farm system (Bryce Wilson was probably the highest rated, at maybe #7?). They were out of it with maybe a 5% chance at the play-offs and everyone telling them to trade Morton and look at 2022.

4 east titles in a row is great. Of course, the east hasn't been very good those years (one of which includes a 60 game season).

Not trying to take away from the overall point. He's done a great job.

Well, other than the dodgers, who has been?

I think the Braves are the class of the division and will be for the next three years at least. They have Acuna, Albies, Swanson, and Riley who are all 25 and younger, and Freeman should still really be productive. That's a great way to start a team and the Braves have always developed talent well.

I posted this in the thread about the Mets' core but it is relevant here as well. I can't see anyone beating them in the NL East for at least 3 years.
