HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

not the superhero we want (deGrom), but is Thor the superhero we need?

08.06... Mets manager Luis Rojas said Thursday that Noah Syndergaard (elbow) will start facing hitters again "soon."
Spin: "I don't think it's next week yet, but that will be happening soon," Rojas added. Syndergaard had a setback with his elbow in late May while on a rehab assignment, but he resumed throwing more than a month ago and would appear fairly close to being ready for rehab games again. The righty won't make it back before September, though, and it's unclear what role the Mets might have planned for him at this point.

...........

(would make for a great closer intro, with thundering Nordic music and a deal with Marvel to allow for a cool video on screen of Thor smiting foes)

I find nothing worse than the camera focusing on Tony LaRussa showing his neverending disgust over an umpire's call, (like he has an angle on inside or outside) the cranky old d-bag.......except for watching this Cubs' line-up.

Can the Cubs stop wearing these garbage jerseys?

Welcome back, Craig Kimbrel.

It's not deGrommian bad luck, but the Sox bullpen has now blown three late leads for Lance Lynn, with today's---three runs---the biggest.
   7. salvomania Posted: August 06, 2021 at 06:34 PM (#6033300)
Actually, it was a 4-0 lead, with Kopech allowing an inherited runner of Lynn's to score from first.
   8. JJ1986 Posted: August 06, 2021 at 08:31 PM (#6033309)
Bases loaded no outs, so obviously the Mets don't score.

I know it's only about 10 games, but I am so FREAKING DONE with Javier Baez, who just might be the most overrated sack of dog crap we traded for since Jim Fregosi. Baez smells like the Fulton Fish Market on a hot summer Friday. Would it hurt him to put the ball in play? DONE!

Yadier batting 6th... I just do not get it. I have the utmost respect for Yadier, but c'mon you can't bat Bader, the team leader in ops, 7th. (okay, he's actually second o'neil is .010 ahead of him)

At least Wainwright looks good tonight, and the offense has showed up. (that won't matter eventually if Shildt continues his inept managing of the pen and roster... guy may be a great player manager, but he makes Torre look like a tactical genius in comparison there)
   15. Howie Menckel Posted: August 06, 2021 at 10:02 PM (#6033320)
and Joe West continues to publicly embarrass himself - well, to clarify, he's so self-absorbed that he likely has never felt embarrassed in his life.

let me rephrase. he just let his utter incompetence as an MLB umpire go on full display as PHI P Bradley throws the ball a foot outside on a 3-2 pitch in a 2-1 game with 2 outs in the 8th inning.

but because West sucks, he punches out Conforto in a game that has the division lead at stake.

must be fun to make consequential mistakes and never pay even a tiny price professionally for it.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: August 06, 2021 at 10:09 PM (#6033321)
I just do not get this obsession with ensuring human umpires call ball and strikes, or at least not have a robo ump having the ability to publicly embarrass the ump by overuling egregious calls.

If you want to keep human umps, then keep them, but have the robo ump have the option to overturn a call that is clearly incorrect immediately.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: August 06, 2021 at 10:26 PM (#6033322)
West also missed strike 3 on Nimmo that should have ended the game, but it was very close and I won't rip him for that.

Nimmo of course flied out on the next pitch - and the Mets' barely-deserved run as NL Least leaders ends after exactly 90 days.

Well, we occupied first place for 90 straight days. And now, we have relinquished our standing with yet another weak offensive performance. It's not over by any stretch and I'm always a believer, but wow, it sucks to see them play this way. With that in mind #LFGM. PLEASE!
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: August 06, 2021 at 11:03 PM (#6033331)
This is what you do with your closer after a bad performance, you bring him back immediately.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: August 06, 2021 at 11:13 PM (#6033332)
Cardinals win a game, as usual, it's a game Wainwright pitched. I know it's not factually true, but it seems that the Cardinals only win games in which Wainwright pitches.
   21. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 06, 2021 at 11:16 PM (#6033334)
Marlins catcher Sandy Leon is now pitching in the 8th inning of a 11-2 game. You don't see a lot of position players pitching in Coors Field, because nine runs in the ninth is not unheard of.

Ryan McMahon just homered off Leon, thankfully not on a 3-0 count.
   22. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 06, 2021 at 11:41 PM (#6033337)
Yankees use 9 pitchers in a Bullpen Day 3-2 win over the Mariners, with gritty, gutsy Brett Gardner driving in the Ghost Runner in the 11th. Looking like they may have a playoff race in them, but need to keep up their current effort. Getting Cole & Montgomery back from the Covid IL would help, as would the return of Severino & Kluber.
   23. Howie Menckel Posted: August 06, 2021 at 11:47 PM (#6033340)
the Yankees were utterly lifeless until they had to call up some AAAAers a couple of weeks ago.

speed, defense, bunts, triples - it seems to have knocked them out of a catatonic state AND induced the deals for Rizzo and Gallo.

I don't count them out anymore, although yes their pitching remains dicey and there are no "rich teams make August deals" options this year. they'll have to dance with these gals....

2 neat ones from @StatsBySTATS

This is the Yankees' 1st game ever in which no pitcher threw 2 innings

Also, they're the 1st team in the modern era (since 1900) to win an extra-inning game without any pitcher throwing 2 innings
   24. The Honorable Ardo Posted: August 07, 2021 at 12:37 AM (#6033356)
I fully expect the Red Sox to finish 4th and a spirited Yankees/Blue Jays race for a wild card berth.
   25. stanmvp48 Posted: August 07, 2021 at 10:19 AM (#6033366)
Cincy is now only 2 1/2 games behind San Diego for the last wild card position

I'm noticing that half of the other NL teams have a better record than any team in the NL East.
   28. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 07, 2021 at 11:27 AM (#6033377)
The Yankees are now 36-20 in games decided by 1 or 2 runs. That may explain why they're 60-49 with only a +16 run differential. In their last two visits to Tropicana Field, they're 4-2 while being outscored by 28 to 12.
   29. nick swisher hygiene Posted: August 07, 2021 at 12:49 PM (#6033379)
23–Surely MLB is gonna have to simply not count extra-inning records from this (hopefully brief) era though….
