Barry Zito unmasked: Ex-MLB star talks ‘Masked Singer’ reveal and which teammate knew it was him

Talk about a curveball! Fans of the FOX competition show “The Masked Singer” got a bit of a surprise Wednesday night when The Rhino was eliminated as one of the show’s final four contestants.

Underneath The Rhino’s mask wasn’t long-time country star Trace Adkins, like some judges had thought. It wasn’t Sam Hunt, either, the college football-player-turned-country singer that some fans had guessed.

It was Barry Zito, the former Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants star. He was a Cy Young winner, a World Series champ and now — in a twist not many people would have seen coming — he outlasted the likes of Bret Michaels, Lil Wayne, Chaka Khan, Tony Hawk, JoJo Siwa and, yes, even Sarah Palin on the popular show.

Zito retired from Major League Baseball after the 2015 season and has since launched a music career. So keen baseball fans who picked up on the show’s mind-bending clues had figured out that The Rhino could be Zito. But it was still a surprise for many of the show’s devoted fans.

I've never really watched the show. What do they judge on? Is this an audience vote thing?

I looked up the clips for Zito and he's ok. Not really up to par to most country singers but passable for an amateur. But there are only 4 people left so he made it really far. Gronk was as good as you'd expect and he made it further than Chaka Khan? (And Lil Wayne, but I don't know if he's supposed to be able to sing...)

Meanwhile two people Zito outlasted are Hunter Hayes, who wiki describes as an "American country music singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist", and Jackie Evancho, described as an "American classical crossover singer." I guess she's been performing professionally as a child and is now 20.

My wife watches the show (which means I watch it, too).

Supposedly it's a mix of the audience and the "celebrity" judges, but it's never really spelled out, and frankly the results are a little convenient at times. I suspect it's mostly who the producers want to move along.

He was pretty good before this week. He and his wife had a kid, and so Zito did not sound that great, but in previous weeks he had been quite good. Plus, the judges value cheeseball earnestness, and Zito is pretty earnest.

The last 3 are almost certainly (lil) Bow Wow, Kandi Burress and (less confident) Justin Guarini from the first season of American Idol, so finishing 4th is no real shame for Zito.

If Lil Bow Wow doesn't win there will be blood.

I've only seen like 60-second fragments or so, but it seems like all the contestants have elaborate costumes and there is lots of background music.

hell, I saw Dylan in his 'tracheotomy-voice' days*, and his backing band was so good the show worked anyway.

* - saw him at the Beacon Theater about 2 years ago, and was shocked that he had bounced back to 1980s voice or so. quite an upgrade, if still not exactly peak Whitney Houston.

Underneath The Rhino’s mask.... was Barry Zito

Everyone knows that The Rhino should rightly have been Pedro Martinez.

#4 Saw a review of one of Frank Sinatra's last performance. It went something like -- His voice is gone, but he's enough of a professional to make the show work.

And I saw Tina Turner in performances around a decade and a half apart. The later one being her final tour. First time was remarkable for the sheer energy -- and I mean in absolute terms. The second time she took a lot of breaks -- skillfully concealed but doing what was needed to get through the show. Again her voice wasn't what it had been but they worked around it. (Much stronger backup performers or at least allowed to do much more)

Dylan's voice changes throughout the years have been a weird thing to listen to. Ever since he started doing the "classic covers" stuff of his last several albums, his vocal approach really has rebounded. I wonder if it was something physical or it was a conscious decision. Hard to know with him, as always.

yes, the classic Cole Porter type of stuff, in the end, is Dylan's first and last musical love.

he sings those songs with a reverence that is a bit shocking for one of music's most irreverent icons.

so I saw Chuck Berry at The Ritz for his 70th or maybe 75th birthday.

I think he played 3 songs, then just asked us, "Well, what songs do YOU want to hear?"

he played for barely over an hour, no doubt having cashed his check beforehand in classic Chuck fashion. but that time limitation also freed him up to exert himself more - knowing he wasn't trying to pull off a Bruce-like marathon performance.
