Bartolo Colón, 46, signs deal with Mexican minor league team

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Bartolo Colón is headed to Mexico.

The right-hander, who will turn 47 in May, has signed with the Monclova Acereros of the Mexican Baseball League.

The Acereros, defending champions of the Triple-A circuit, announced the signing of the Dominican right-hander Friday. The team didn’t provide details of the contract.

“Bartolo Colón would be an important piece of the pitching staff of the current champions, becoming one of the bigger signings in our baseball history,” the team said in a press release. “The ‘Big Sexy’ show would be something the Monclova fans will be to enjoy.”

And the dream of another four-decade player remains alive.

I’ll say.

Weird, you don't usually hear of the Mexican League referred to as a "Mexican minor league." It's not like there's a higher Mexican league above it - it's just that for historical reasons the Mexican League has a formal relationship with Major League Baseball and has been classified at the AAA level since 1967. I'm not actually clear on what that relationship does for either party.

Did you know that Jorge Cantu and Félix Pié have been playing there for years? Manny Parra and Jose Valverde played there last year too.

I wonder if was meant as a means to incorporate the Mexican League into organized baseball, so that there would be no attempts to raid the Major Leagues as was done in 1946.

And Chris Carter hit 49 home runs there last season.

Ruben Rivera has been playing there since he left the majors. Put up some beastly numbers, too, including 313 homers. He hit .195/.353/.220 in 2019, so this might be the end of the road for him.

Ruben was the classic "all bat, no Jeter's glove" player.

I know that was a joke, but the scouting reports on the young Rivera were that he had a tremendous combination of range and arm and was going to win a bunch of Gold Gloves once he figured it all out. Alas he figured very little out, but he at least was a plus fielder for his entire MLB career.

He's just staying in shape for his next MLB comeback.

What’s Mexican League meal money like? And the postgame buffet? Hope Bartolo’s agent took care of the essentials.
