Baseball Question of the Day: If you could change one rule, what would it be?

Today’s first baseball question — our unofficial one — was about your favorite Opening Day memory. Let’s have do a standalone question. It’s an oldie but a goldie — one that I’ve been asked a million times before but which I think everyone has an opinion about — and it’s this: if you could change one rule in the game, what would it be?

For this let’s keep it to an actual rule. I’m not asking about the circumstances of the game, what cities you’d expand to, how you would realign the league or how you would change the playoffs. We can do those on other days. For this I want to know about something in the rule book or the official scoring or what have you.

Also, let’s once again not include the DH. There is nothing more predictable and rote than DH/anti-DH arguments. It really does get old to do that for the 10,000th time. Most of us know 100% of what you’re gonna say about the DH the moment you start saying it. All we need to know is if you’re pro or con. I’d rather argue about religion or politics.

All right, what sort of new rulebook could we come up with after all of our potential changes?

Since I used my primary one in the other thread, I'll advance the old standby - get rid of the infield fly rule.

One thing I've noticed is that the articles about baseball have suddenly become a lot more interesting. People actually seem to be enjoying talking about baseball more now than when they are actually playing baseball.

Anyway, regarding the question. I'll get away from the time/pace of game stuff and I'll advocate for the "safety base" at first base. This is what they do in softball. So rather than the runner having to come back to fair territory to touch first base they'd be able to stay in foul ground reducing potential interference calls as well as collisions at first. Of course on hits to the outfield and whatnot they could still hit the regular base as they round the base so it doesn't change anything from that standpoint.

Also, much smaller gloves to incentivize balls in play.

Orioles should be allowed to play major league calibre players.

I would eliminate the 3 batter rule for pitchers. For symmetry purposes, I would also require an announced batter to hit so that you can't pinch hit for a pinch hitter if the opposing team changes pitchers.

Here's one: I would finish the Buster Posey Rule the way it should have been all along: Baserunners are not allowed to lead with the upper body in contact plays at the plate.

OK Elroy, name that pitch clock.

I agree with the 20 second clock so we won't need the 3-batter rule.

I never quite understood the appeal play rule. If a runner left early, they should be called out if tagged, even if they're safely on the next base.

Also, catching a ball on the fly, but landing beyond the outfield wall should be a home run.

End the "safe-oops-out" calls at second base that only slow motion cameras can see.

So what do you do for the guy who just scored? Do you have to chase him into the dugout?

End the "safe-oops-out" calls at second base that only slow motion cameras can see.

This, but not by outlawing replay and pretending we can't see it -- acknowledge that we can and fix it properly in the rules. Just make it still count as touching if you make contact then bounce up and hover a fraction of an inch above the bag.
