Baseball Question of the Day: Who’s the best-lookin’ ballplayer of all time

The man who brought you Baseball’s Most Handsome Managers once again swims to the shallowest of depths and asks you to objectify the men of the National Pastime. He asks: who is the best-lookin’ baseball player of all time.

It’s subjective, obviously. And given how people tend to favor recency in such matters due to more familiar fashion/hairstyles/etc, it will probably skew more recent, but I ask you to do what you can to think outside the temporal box, utilize Google to the best of your ability, and look back at baseball history a bit if you can.

Don Mossi need not apply.

#2 Bill James on Don Mossi “the complete five-tool ugly player.”

“He could run ugly, hit ugly, throw ugly, field ugly, and ugly for power. He was ugly to all fields. He could ugly behind the runner as well as anybody, and you talk about pressure ... man, you never saw a player who was uglier the in clutch.”

Well yeah. It's so obvious, I expect it to be unanimous. Not sure what Rowland is thinking.

Barry Bonds or Ted Williams is an obvious choice, but I do wonder, if you could isolate lookin' talent from swingin' talent, how people like Joe Sewell or, heck, Daric Barton would do.

My wife nominates young Bob Boone. Alas, he did not age well at all. She also thought Chase Utley was cute

   20. Booey Posted: April 14, 2020 at 11:58 AM (#5939582)
To my non expert eyes, good looking HOFers and HOF types: Ken Griffey Jr, young Barry Bonds (Pittsburgh days), young Ripken, Ryne Sandberg, Paul Molitor, Barry Larkin, Albert Pujols, young Carlos Beltran, Derek Jeter, older ARod (he got better looking as he aged), Jim Palmer, Bob Gibson, Eddie Mathews, Ted Williams, Chipper Jones, Mike Mussina, Roberto Clemente, Joe Mauer, Lou Gehrig, young Jimmie Foxx (before he got chubby).

Not a lot of pre WW2 players. Hard to tell in old black and white, depression era photos of players who rarely smiled.

What, no love for Otis Nixon?

Otis Nixon was considered hot in the Ptolemaic era.

A couple of current era possibilities: Kevin Kiermaier and Adam Wainwright.

A couple from days of yore: Lou Boudreau and George Foster.

I once heard a woman wax rhapsodic about Mark Teixiera's ass. And she would have been happy to have her ass waxed by him.

Ironically, Dan Uggla looks pretty good.

Reminds me of Shawn Green, who was (and presumably is) close friends with Delgado - Green's cousin is a friend of mine so I have had the chance to meet him in person. He's a good looking guy.
   26. Cooper Nielson Posted: April 14, 2020 at 12:31 PM (#5939606)
Some that haven't been mentioned yet: Kris Bryant, Ron Darling, Edwin Jackson, Kirk McCaskill.

Wow, didn't know Kevin Kiermaier looked like that. I only know him from his highlight plays, and I think I might have confused him with Kevin Pillar (not as handsome).

#23 - Molitor too

On the flipside, I never thought of Tom Glavine or Craig Biggio as good looking when they played; they always just had your average, generic, forgettable faces to my eyes. But they've aged really well and now in middle age they're rocking the silver fox look.

As a counter to my #20, HOFers who look particularly offputting to me: Babe Ruth, Yogi Berra, Goose Goslin, Warren Spahn, Randy Johnson, Ernie Lombardi, Eddie Collins, Lefty Grove, Mike Schmidt, Don Sutton, Kirby Puckett.

More good looking HOFers that I forgot to mention earlier: Mickey Mantle, Duke Snider, George Brett, Bob Feller, Mike Piazza, young Nolan Ryan

Should be a sub-category for the phenomenon of guys whose good-lookingness flips when they put on a baseball cap.

Sam Fuld and Matt Olson are really ridiculously good-looking - in baseball caps. Take them off, and they're just normal-jock-handsome.

Marcus Semien, contrariwise, is handsome with the cap on, but only becomes really ridiculously good-looking when he takes the cap off.

Gehrig was absurdly good-looking. I mean...no knock on Gary Cooper (who was, in fact, super-duper)...but my goodness.

I refuse to believe that the best looking ballplayer in baseball history:

A) was nicknamed Biscuit Pants
B) had a disastrous screen test to play Tarzan because nobody thought he looked good in the costume
and
C) had his wife (allegedly) succumb to the seductive powers of a man who ate 18 hot dogs a day.

Objectively, the best looking ballplayer is the man who was on the cover of Sports Illustrated at the end of the season where he led the American League in RBI, had an OPS+ of 155, and finished third in the MVP vote, and all they wanted to talk about was his sex appeal.
   40. base ball chick Posted: April 14, 2020 at 01:13 PM (#5939647)
hello boys

lou gehrig was better looking than 99% of the movie stars of his generation. better than gary cooper

jim palmer is really really good looking - my mama had a thing bout him, especially those underwear ads (was that the one where some grrrl said - take it off, take it ALL off?) and i have thought - too bad there weren't silky boxer briefs back then...

grady sizemore (yes I have the coffee cup pic) and rafe palmiero

barry lamar is still unbelieveably good looking - one of the 5 best looking males i've ever seen. i prefer the leaner bicycle look to the linebacker look, must say. although i'd manage even if he weighed too much

curtis granderson is FINE and so are tim anderson and paul goldschmidt

carlos beltran was really beautiful in 04 (when i first saw him up close, no not THAT close) and so was javy lopez the catcher (before roidz)

there are a lot of guys who, in street clothes (don't wanna say out of uniform cuz i don't want anyone to think i know what they look like out of uniform) are really nice looking (but not HOTTTTT) guys - like geoff blum

and of course, youknowwho

i will say that fortunately for youse guys, the definition of HOTTTTT and/or goodlooking varies a whole lot from woman to woman

in order to qualify for HOTTTTT, a man has to be just as HOTTTTT if he was working in a grocery store and not a millionaire or athlete...

Some people probably have a different-colored-eyes fetish.

in order to qualify for HOTTTTT, a man has to be just as HOTTTTT if he was working in a grocery store and not a millionaire or athlete...
Shouldn't grocery store workers these days get the benefit of the "women find bravery sexy" thing that, say, firefighters have had for years?

Edit: No, no, this one's better:

I don't think that there's anything especially sexy about Ichiro in a suit. He's okay, but pretty much any competent lefthanded hitting outfielder would look just as sexy when properly attired.

I don't. Ichiro seems like he spends 18 hours a day practicing baseball, or possibly 17 hours practicing and an additional 1 hour self-flagellating for not having practiced enough. Even in retirement. I read that he's taken one vacation in his life and that he regretted it.

I've always been shocked by Arky Vaughan's rugged good looks in his bbref photo. I think he's quite underrated by this evaluation criteria, too.

I had a GF about 10 years ago who was in love with Joe Mauer.

In the Baltimore/DC area, Brady Anderson was very well admired back in the 90's, particularly without a shirt. And he's a guy who seems to be aging well, although perhaps somewhat artificially so.

I'm starting to agree with BBC about Brad Ausmus. I think he actually looked kind of weird in his younger days, but as he progresses through middle age he seems to be at the very tip-top of his age bracket looks-wise. Oh how I hope I age like he has.

jacoby ellsbury - YUM

dick baney? yuck

christy mathewson is good looking and would be better looking with a better haircut and fewer clothes

i suppose both billy and brad qualify as good looking/handsoome, but like christy, not HOTTTTTTT

I can think of exactly 2 men who women of widely differnt ages and races all swoon over and that is bradley awesomeness and denzel washington

arky vaughn might could be more appealing with a good haircut and better clothes

brady anderson is ok, not really handsome. and his body looked a lot better before roids.

In Ball Four Jim Bouton talks about how this didn't carry over for Gene Brabender: huge and intimidating on the ballfield, but somehow not when he was in front of the TV cameras for the "Ball Four" TV show.

I would think Brabender would look tougher without the specs. But maybe the opposite happened.

Mike matheny routinely won best looking manager so I have to assume he does ok as a player too.

I assume Roy Hobbs has to be on the list

My older sister starts cheering for the Yankees.
Why? my parents and I ask.

I love that I saw thread and thought DON MOSSI JOKE!
Came in and my wish was fulfilled in 5 posts.
Well done.

There was one in the intro, too.

When Jeter hosted SNL, there was a sketch where he played Mrs. Soriano and David Wells and David Cone played groupies. Anyway, I forgot what this discussion was about.

Matheney was loved by the ladies as a Brewer, particularly after taking the ball to the face like a champ.
