Mets’ acting GM Zack Scott says team has played ‘very mediocre’ baseball most of season

“We’ve played very mediocre baseball for most of the year,” Scott said. “This recent stretch has been much worse than mediocre. We would’ve taken mediocre at this point. For this stretch it’s been unacceptably bad and we need to be better.”

The team’s 56-55 record at the time of those comments clearly demonstrates the mediocrity, but the bigger question on everyone’s mind is how a team so talented can struggle this badly, particularly on offense.

“That’s the tricky thing, is figuring out why,” Scott said. “Most of our hitters are underperforming (from) their career norms. There’s never one simple reason. Sometimes it’s the guys’ mechanics and getting those on track, sometimes it’s their approach at the plate, what their plan is. It can be a lot of different things so it’s hard to pinpoint.”

Along with the dreary offense, a never-ending stream of injuries has defined the Mets’ season. Scott was asked about his performance staff, who have seen a bunch of soft tissue injuries derail some of the team’s best players.

“I don’t think there’s a systemic issue,” Scott asserted. “I’ve been impressed with the performance staff overall. They are very well-educated on good preventative methods and good rehab treatments post-injury. In some cases you can have the best plan, and if the plan’s not followed, that’s not going to necessarily yield a good result. On the soft tissue, we’ve talked through each one. There’s nothing that’s stood out to me as some egregious mistake in our process, treatment or training.”

The Mets have largely been mediocre as a franchise since 2000. Not especially bad but not good. They have won between 70-90 games every year except for two seasons.

Their in game management sucks.
And, they have a disturbing lack of fundamentals.

They're so bad they even lost their M because it looks too much like a W.

Their front office and leadership is worse than mediocre.

He's on the IL but Lindor battled back from that horrendous start. It's not what he's being paid for but by bWAR he's already up to 2.1 WAR which, as bad seasons go, ain't bad. The OPS+ is up to 94 -- 264/361/464 in June-July which again is not superstar but is a nice line anytime and a 361 OBP in this day and age is mighty nice. DeGrom of course is also on the IL and it's no surprise a team struggles when it's two best players have been on the IL for the last month or so.

Thus ends possibly my nicest post about the Mets in 20 years.

Funny in the year leading up to the year of the free agent SS, the Mets will end the year with 2 of them.

Hard to believe lindor has that value so far. How much of that is defense?

The Mets have a 96 OPS+ (non-pitchers) and 108 ERA+ which means they really are a 500 team. Pythagorean W-L: 53-58. So basically they are lucky to be above 500 at all right now. Mix in their ace (deGrom) being out for an extended time and this is very predictable. Their big off-season get - Lindor - having a sub 100 OPS+ doesn't help, their regular corner OF'ers both being sub 100 for OPS+ also hurts.

I love to play different games. And being a sports person this blog is sharing a lot of information with us, and also offering us to get review to finish our academic tasks easily. For baseball players, it is useful to join this blog. So that you people will have enough knowledge of the other sports and games as well.
