Baseball’s amateur draft moving to Omaha

Major League Baseball plans to hold its amateur draft in Omaha, Nebraska, ahead of the College World Series, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because MLB did not plan to make the announcement until later this week.

The draft will be held from June 10-12, and the College World Series is slated to start June 13. The decision was first reported by the website d1baseball.com.

This seems to make some sense. The draft inside of the MLB Network studio always seemed weird.

I haven't been to the CWS since it was at Rosenblatt, but it remains one of the my favorite fan experiences in all of sports. This makes sense, should/could be a splashy event. As noted in #1, its like a lame ass Rottisserie draft the way they do it now.

I had never thought of the draft as taking place anywhere in particular.

For a long time it was literally a conference call, so you're on the right track.

I'm okay with the location but I would prefer it was just AFTER the CWS, not before. NFL and NBA drafts happen after the college championships, not before.

But those guys are already known by most fans of those sports. I think having it before the CWS provides the opportunity for people to take a look at various top picks they previously hadn't heard of. I would assume that's the idea.

I've never been to the CWS, but it remains the sporting even I'd most like to attend (not that this would affect that decision, though it seems like a good idea.

Indeed.

I don't remember if it was the first time they did it or not, but Baseball America got the.... "rights"?... I guess? to broadcast the audio online for the 2001 draft. It was surreal -- really was like a roto draft where we had a speaker phone in the middle of a table.

*Garble* *Garble*... [Team] selects (re-)draft number 34212, Doe, John *static*... *fuzz*....

I had never really thought of it in those terms. I go to a few CWS games each year and one of the things I like the best is seeing the new prospects for each team. I don't think doing it your way would bother me that much either.

Probably easier to get players to show up if it's before the CWS. At least you already have 8 good teams in town.

It also gives the opportunity to hype up picks and speculate which can drive 100x the amount of television as just listing their draft position. I also like that the athletes are incentivized to perform their best at the CWS in order to impress scouts and improve their draft position. Having the draft before the CWS incentivizes players to make sure they don't get hurt and lose a ton of money.

I think you have me talked into it. Players use the NCAA tournament in hoops to raise their draft status. Would be interesting to see how high someone would jump with a dominating CWS performance.
