Baseball’s Most Handsome Managers

2. Mike Matheny, Royals

Matheny was, at one time, Baseball’s Most Handsome Manager. The latter portion of his tenure in St. Louis — and the ascent of Gabe Kapler — knocked him down a peg, but he’s still, quite obviously, one of the best-looking men to ever manage a baseball team. Know what would ensure that he was number one again? If the Royals would let him manage in a suit and tie, Tom Landry-style. Check out the first few seconds of this video from his introductory press conference, before he puts on the jersey. The man can wear a suit:

What a ridiculous column.

bbc will be jumping in to talk Brad Ausmus here. hahaha

Now that I'm older than some managers (and just about all players) is it weird that I mentally inserted myself on that list? I think I'd be somewhere around #6/7. Pretty sure I could beat out Bell (might be close; depends on angles and so forth) and there's a chance at beating Beltran. However, Counsell, et al, are clearly out of my league. Although, I will say I think David Ross is underrated.

The main thing that ranking taught me is that I don't pay much attention to managers anymore. Nine-year-old me could probably name all 26 MLB managers, but I'd probably get about eight of these 30 guys if there's a Sporcle quiz.

Can you name the MLB managers?

16 out of 23 for the non-vacant. Better than I expected.

It seems unfair to me to rank Snitker 30th. His game face does lend itself to some awkward photos, but I think he's a pretty handsome dude as far as 64-year-old men go.

What a ridiculous column.

Agree. Matheny should clearly be #1. And Counsell over Beltran????

I don't see if with Beltran. He should be in the bottom half. I might swap him and Dave Martinez, actually.

Matheny taking a baseball to the face like a champ, and playing the next day is reason enough to put him at #1

Martinez definitly got a raw deal here
   12. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: December 09, 2019 at 01:10 PM (#5907110)
Martinez was good-looking enough as a young guy to join the Cindy Sandberg parade (yeah, allegedly...). As happens to so many former players, though, his face has filled out quite a bit. I do think I'd still put him in the upper half, though.

Scott Servais looks like he'd be a big hit with the "cute but troubled young woman with daddy issues" demographic.

Were the rankings done by the lovely Mrs. Calcaterra?

Among women I know, I suspect Kapler would win this one.

Some of these guys are cute, but they're no Joe Torre.
   17. Hank Gillette Posted: December 10, 2019 at 04:51 AM (#5907354)
Other than the top five, I don’t see any of them as being “handsome”, and number one doesn’t belong in the top 10. As they said, though, it is all subjective.

That second picture of Snitker could be William Barr with a shaved head.

I have zero capacity to judge which men are handsome, or rather, which men are handsome to heterosexual women. Now and again a heterosexual woman will say such and such a woman is pretty and guys will say "huh?" But generally, women seem to get it pretty much right.

Yogi Berra stopped managing just because his handsomeness wasn't fair to the other managers.

Ah see ah be a lil late to this here partay but being a grrrrl i had to get in the last word

there is a BOG difference between handsome and HOTTTTTTT

hinch is handsome but not HOTTTTTT
matheny is a well arranged (heh) male but as hot as a lump of lead

rocco baldelli is neither of the above

any male who has a 3-4 day scraggly ass stubble thing goin on is neither handsome nor HOTTTTTTTTTT

none of this year's managers are particularly good looking guys - well, maybe davei martinez - he got the winners strut thing

bbc, with the important caveat that people's mmv, of course. for instance, some people love stubble.

i think i (cis, straight dude) have okay radar (meaning alignment with consensus) for handsomeness, but not so much for hotness. having said that, counsell had the best pic here, right?

not sure that these pics are doing some of them favors - i mean, kapler literally used to model (albeit fitness, not fashion, i think).
   23. base ball chick Posted: December 12, 2019 at 04:50 PM (#5908297)
i know some people love stubble. people love all KINDS of things. things that if i didn't see copies of the arrest records i wouldn't bleeve.
that said, there's nothing better than a nice clean fresh shaved man that you happen to like who happens to be lookin at me jusssst right and

kapler has a nice bod from the neck down, if you happen to like that overmuscled look which i don't real too particular much

counsell definitely has the best pic. he looks like he's maybe 30. cute. nice. not handsome. certainly not HOTTTTTTTTT

in the pics, lots of these guys look like they're having a Very Bad Day and are in a Very Bad Mood and 2 bads is too bad

Just out of the curiosity, does this love of stubble that some people have require that said stubble be an aesthetic choice, not one born out of laziness or does it not matter?

...asking for an.... ummmm.... friend.
   25. base ball chick Posted: December 12, 2019 at 05:40 PM (#5908313)
well zonk
tell your, um, ahem, friend, that some people just like that look and some people just like guys who don't give a da*m what they look like

it's not MY choice. and i don't care if a guy cares what he looks like as long as he cares enough to be smart enough to shave if he wants to be with me
