Bay Bridge spanned: A’s, Giants make 1st trade since 1990

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — The first baseball trade in almost 30 years between two teams separated only by a bay and a bridge happened Saturday, when the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics completed a deal.

In a move to add experience to their bullpen, the A’s got right-hander Burch Smith from the Giants for cash.

The last time Oakland and San Francisco made a trade was on Dec. 4, 1990, when the Athletics acquired outfielder Ernest Riles from the Giants for outfielder Darren Lewis and minor league pitcher Pedro Pena.

“So that broke the string, huh?” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said.

Not sure what is stranger- how long it has been since those two teams have made a deal, or that the last deal they made was the year after one beat the other in the World Series…..

This surprised me. I knew Santiago Casilla bounced back and forth but those were free agent signings, but Rajai Davis was a midseason acquisition. Looked it up, and yes it was a waiver claim.

It's kind of weird that they'd not deal for so long and then when they did it would be such a non-event.

I remember a story that Giants GM Brian Sabean refused to even communicate with some teams. I got the impression the A's were on the list.

I could see that. Any of us who are in fantasy or sim leagues have met "that guy" that you just can't deal with. In a league of 30, I'd assume every GM would have 3-4 guys he doesn't talk to.

Moneyball relates Sabean talking to Beane ("Hey, Sabes...") about some random reliever during the Great Ricardo Rincon Sweepstakes of 2002, but the talks were never portrayed as serious. I think that was portrayed in the movie as well.

Sabean was probably too weighed down with his World Series and other championship rings to get around to talking with everyone.

I confess to not having read that book Billy Beane wrote.
Why are the A's acquiring this guy anyway? To pitch in AAA I hope.
