Before Balls and Strikes, Umpires Make a Call to Pray

But on a day-to-day basis, umpires are among baseball’s most isolated figures. Increasingly removed from an era in which umpires were often men with hard-charging lives, some of them haunted by war, the full-time umpiring staff of today includes just 76 men who travel the country in crews of four and keep a distance from the players and managers they govern. Their lives can feel like blurs of airports and fastballs and hotels and brightly lit ballparks, punctuated by calls home to their children and hollers from the dugouts.

Their spiritual traditions can serve as anchors, with the lessons and lives they find in Scripture showing them a way forward on the field and away from it.

“Jesus would have been a great umpire because he wasn’t a milquetoast where he would have allowed himself to get run over,” Barrett, who has been the officiant at some umpires’ funerals, said in an interview in Chicago. “You see him standing up to the Pharisees. He would have been able to give it right back on the field.”

He paused and smiled.

“Of course, he would have been perfect.”

If Jesus is a home plate umpire, Jesus is as blind as Stevie Wonder.

Sheesh - so 'macho Jesus' now?

That's sort of the actual Jesus. Voluntarily dying through crucifixion ain't exactly milquetoast. Neither is beating moneylenders with a whip.

Snapper's is not a peaceful Jesus. You have been warned.

Okay Harris, let's not start a holy war here.

Snapper's is not a peaceful Jesus. You have been warned.

Not only peaceful. Peaceful and aggressive. Forgiving yet insisting on justice and sitting in judgement. It's not either or, like with most important ideas. There is nuance, and an appropriate time and place for each behavior.

Jesus would have been a fantastic umpire. He would have been great at deflecting arguments from managers. "Let he who has not pulled his starter too early cast the first stone." And then he would just start writing in the dirt until they go away.

Also, he's exactly what we want from an umpire - happy to serve and not craving the focus. "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and servant of all."

Xavier Novell had a hell of a resume in the Catholic Church. According to the BBC, he “became Spain’s youngest bishop” in 2010 at 41 years old. He was also an exorcist and such a big fan of conversion therapy and opponent of abortion, euthanasia, and gay marriage that he was considered extreme even by the Church itself.

Now, because he wanted this rap sheet to be a bit more colorful, Novell has left all of this behind to pursue a relationship with psychologist and author of “satanic-tinged erotic fiction,” Silvia Caballol.
...
he’s apparently now trying to find work as an agricultural engineer
...
“Church colleagues told Spanish media they believe Bishop Novell had been possessed by demons,” the article reads, “with one saying this was ‘not a problem of celibacy but rather of infestation.’”
...
They also say that Pope Francis has personally “urged Bishop Novell to undergo an exorcism,”
