I...kinda like it. (Not as good as Spiders, tho...)

Rich Hill to the Mets for the rotting corpse of Tommy Hunter and a 23-year-old C prospect

Would be surreal for Rich Hill to pitch for Mets.

In 2015, Hill pitched for the Long Island Ducks on a salary of $500 a week.

Six years and $51 million later, 38 miles from where he played Independent League baseball, he might be pitching at CitiField.

That's a very odd move by TB. Hill was #2 in IP, t2nd in ERA+ among TB starters. (EDIT: And Glasnow, #1 in ERA+, in on the 60-day so Hill was probably their #1 starter.)

Not that anybody cares (nor should you) but Cubs win 8-3; big day for Chirinos, good outing for Davies.

Agree that Guardians is weird. If you're gonna go Guardians, just go Knights. What exactly is the cute mascot for Guardians? There's nothing soft and cuddly about Guardians. Even if they head in a canine direction, "guard dog" is not a friendly image. Gus the affable, drunk night watchman could work. Cute spy drones flying around would bring that 21st century surveillance state feel.

Agree that Guardians is weird.

I assume the Cleveland execs preferred a new nickname ending in "-dians" to just slightly alter existing home jerseys for the 2022 season.

Just picture the savings on silk screening fees and sewing charges!
HARUMPH! HARUMPH!

Could have saved more by changing to the Cleveland Indices. The cheer could be "Go Cees!"
Or maybe the Cleveland Gardeners. Their mascot could be a bald, roided-up nutjob who bashes the roof of the dugout with a bat.

Rays have a budget. Hill was probably the only way to help pay for Cruz. I wonder who else might go to pay off the rest

I was confused too, but there is a very good reason for "The Guardians" nickname, it makes sense because of the iconic (and increasingly so over the years) statues which "guard" the bridge over the river when entering Cleveland, and happen to right in front of the Cleveland baseball stadium:

The "Guardians of Traffic" statues

There are 8 of them, each of them holding a different land-transport vehicle: stagecoach, covered wagon, hay rack, early 20th century car, and four different trucks (one of them an early electric truck, apparently).

So that seems very appropriate, very Cleveland-centric, and it makes a lot of different interesting merchandising and other tie-ins. Who wants to root for the covered wagon Guardian for the 7th inning mascot race?

I have visited Cleveland at least 15-20 times, and I really like the city and the people.

that said, not one of the countless people I have ever met there over the years - nor others I know who are from there - has ever brought up the existence of these statues. I mean, I would think they least would have rated a time-killing 2-page article in the old Continental Airlines in-flight magazine, but no.

if the locals like it, though, alrighty then.

meanwhile, I see the Blue Jays recalled catcher Alejandro "The Beast" Kirk today and he is playing vs the Mets.

I was ready to giggle at the ludicrous claimed height and weight for Kirk, but 5-foot-8, 265 pounds .... maybe a little generous, but not impossible.

Eduardo Rodriguez left in the 2nd with a migraine. Phillips Valdez came in to relieve him with 2 runners on. He did hit a batter, but struck out the side to keep it 1-0 and struck out 7 in 3 innings. Hell of an effort.

#11: OK, I wasn't aware of any local connection.

seems like a bad job by Red Sox fans on a high liner to left by Hernandez - looked like the Green Monster front row fans could have gone "Jeffrey Maier" on it.

now, unlike that travesty, we now have replay these days. but might they have ruled it a ground rule double?

instead, AAAA rando NYY LF gets a Hollywood bounce, and it's only a single....

then on the very next batter, a long fly to CF-RF takes one hop and a fan does reach forward and grab the ball. but it would have landed in the bullpen othwrwise, so it's a ground rule double regardless and the lethargic swells in the Green Monster seats have at least temporarily perhaps kept the Red Sox from tying the score.

and then a sac fly, plus a 2-run homer on Cole's 98th pitch, give BOS a 3-1 lead in the 5th.

And then Duran hits a gapper that bounces out, preventing a potential run. Torturous inning.

Mets 3, Blue Jays 0 is a final

while the simultaneous Red Sox 3, Yankees 1 game was still in the top of the 7th at the time

So the Rays got 6 in the 9th to beat Cleveland...and of course Cruz homered in his first game with Tampa.

I am no longer amazed by Tampa as I just assume most things they try is just going to work.

Rays took virtually equal salary back for Hill (Tommy Hunter).
