Beloved ex-Met Bartolo Colon finally retires from baseball at 50

Bartolo Colon, 50, has officially retired from baseball, Z101’s Hector Gomez reported.

The right-hander, whose Major League career spanned 21 seasons, joined the Mets in 2014 and became a dependable part of the rotation for three seasons.

He threw 31-plus starts each year, with his best statistical season coming in 2016 when he finished 15-8 with a 3.43 ERA and earned his fourth and final All-Star Game selection.

HOLD THE PRESSES! Bartolo Colon is reportedly NOT retiring. Perhaps the increases in grocery prices made him decide to keep working?

Imagine if he had ever been in shape?

Round is a shape...

I know a lot of baseball players that are in good shape but aren't very good.

That's always been one of the attractions of baseball is that you don't have to necessarily be an athlete (or look like an athlete) to play the game at a high level. Probably more true for pitchers than hitters.

Babe Ruth
Kent Tekulve
Mickey lolich
Rusty Staub
Tim Lincecum
Kyle Schwarber /john Kruk - they are really the same guy, right ?

Smokey burgess
Jon Lester

Add Wilbur Wood to that list.

If I were coaching young pitchers, I'd have them watch Old Bart in action. Four-seam, two-seam, cutter, hitting all four quadrants of the strike zone, topping out at 91. No 100+ heat, no breaking balls, no extraneous motion, just throwing to the catcher's target.

A fat tub of goo who was a .400 hitter until his final year in the NL.

Ortiz, late Stargell, late Gwynn, Alejandro Kirk, Vogelbach, late Nelson Cruz. Hitting a baseball is hard and, if you can do it, they will pay you to do it even if that's all you can do. And of course that's even more true if you can throw 95 or have good movement on pitches since that's nearly 100% of the job description.

The progression of Colon's public image over his career always reminds me of a quotation from Chinatown:

"Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough."

Amusingly, he was outed in the Mitchell Report as a steroid user. That may account for the home run.

No better proof than Colon that we will never know who took steroids

I assume it was during injury recovery which in my mind is a co
Platelet different thing than using it while active.

also positive for Viagra, perhaps.

as a Met, Colon had two families.
the wife and their 4 kids lived in Clifton, NJ.
the mistress and their 2 kids lived a (in theory only, mostly) modest GW Bridge ride away in Washington Heights in upper Manhattan (trivial: my Dad's last FDNY job was as Battalion Chief in a firehouse there).

the wife apparently was aware of the "arrangement," and afaik they are still married.

he met the mistress at his favorite restaurant - she was his favorite waitress.

The positive test (and 50-game suspension) for synthetic testosterone also helped ID him as a PED dabbler.

- "love" - pls

you mean large quantities of $$$ and living in luxury while agreeing to pretend your kids father actually loves you

Yeah, and Clifton NJ is hardly luxury in that part of the world: quick check of Redffin shows that there's not a single property there right now listing at more than $1.1 million.

Dude is cheaping out on the homestead to pay his mistresss's rent in gentrifying Washington Heights--not a good look.

Maybe she has a rent-stabilized place though?

I’m not…shocked that he would fall in love with a woman who brings him food.

yeah, I kind of put that one a tee for anyone who needed to get a good swing in

Pitching for the A's in 2012, he threw 38 consecutive strikes in a game against the Angels.
