Benintendi, Red Sox agree to $10 million, two-year deal

BOSTON (AP) — Outfielder Andrew Benintendi and the Boston Red Sox avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $10 million, two-year contract on Saturday.

He will earn $3.4 million this year and $6.6 million in 2021.

The 25-year-old hit .277 with 51 homers and 259 RBIs in his first three-plus seasons in the major leagues. In 2018, he led all players with 15 runs in the postseason while helping the Red Sox win the World Series. His game-ending catch in Game 4 of the ALCS was The Associated Press “Play of the Year.”

So, how long before their effort to trade him becomes something rather embarrassing?

I don't keep up with arb like I used to but this seems pretty cheap for this day and age. He's been very durable, 8 WAR, 2 WAA over the last 3 years. Schwarber got $3.4 last year and $7 this year with only one truly full season and only that one above-average. Mancini is getting $4.8 next year in his first year. Rosario has bone $4.2 and $7.8. Conforto got $4 then, after a very good season, a bump to $8 (seems he maybe should have gotten a bit more). Conforto's probably better, Rosario might be better, the other two guys clearly worse. I know, the diff between $10 and $12 is chump change in the grand sceme of things and it's his first real payday so it's nice to avoid the injury/collapse risk but the Red Sox deeserve no favors.

Mancini is worse?

Yes, Mancini has 5.9 WAR, 0 WAA for his career. Mancini can't field or run. Mancini was better in 2019 but considerably worse in 2017-18.

I think Mancini will hit better than Benintendi, going forward, and especially if he ever escapes from Baltimore.

I agree this seems cheap.

Weirdly, Benintendi submitted $4.15M as his arb number against the Red Sox $3.4M. MLBTR estimate was something like $4.9M I think, which would be more in line with what Walt is saying.
