Bergen Record: Klapisch: GMs: Judge Wally on baseball

Wally Backman of the ‘86 Mets…as forgotten as their unhip “Get Metsmerized” theme song.

Backman, on finding a job in baseball…..I’m stumped why I can’t get a job, even on the minor league level. It’s not like I robbed a bank or did drugs. The whole thing boils down to a lousy divorce and a DUI. I’ve paid for that mistake. The president of the United States has a DUI on his record and he’s still president. I made a mistake and learned from it. I’ve grown up.

What I don’t understand is how the Mets were willing to interview me for a job on the major league level, and now they won’t consider me for the minor leagues. It’s not even like I’m asking them to take a risk. I’ve proven myself on the minor league level. I know how to manage kids. My track record proves that.

Maybe GMs are afraid that Backman would do to their teams what Bush has done to the country.

(Woohoo! Political baiting! Now to never check this thread again.)

But whasn't there another incident in which Backman stabbed another coach in the back, to help himself get a job. That might be why he is blackballed (if he is).

Assuming the bad things we may have heard about him are true...does anyone believe in redemption? Give him a job in the minors. If he fails, not much is lost.

You mean this?:

Backman recovered and went on to manage Class A Winston-Salem in 2001 and Double-A Birmingham in 2002 and 2003. The 2002 team won the Southern League title. Backman was considered to be a candidate for the parent team Chicago White Sox managerial job after Jerry Manuel was fired following the 2003 season. However, reports emerged that Backman had been not-so-discreetly rooting against the White Sox during the season, in the hopes that Manuel would be let go and the managerial position would open up. As a result, the White Sox organization severed ties with Backman and he was hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks to manager their Class A Lancaster affiliate.

I believe that Backman is one of the last guys I'd ever hire to work in my minor league system. He led the cabal of players on the late 80s Mets who tortured Gregg Jefferies because Jefferies was taking Backman's job. 15 years later, he evidently again took a totally selfish rather than an organizational perspective on the White Sox' success. I'd also think he's an idiot for taking this campaign to the media, rather than laying low, taking whatever job he can get -- even if it's scouting -- to try to behave himself and make his way back. By criticizing teams for not hiring him, Backman will accomplish absolutely nothing other than to extend (perhaps permanently) the coma into which he's put his career.

Absolutely right. He is fully, vividly demonstrating bad judgement, precisely the quality that has bollixed his career progress.

Good night, Wally.

Maybe Wally should do what Tampa Bay is considering: change his name.

Why is Tampa Bay considering changing Wally Backman's name?

Good question. I didn't see that mentioned anywhere?
Is there a link?

Tampa doesn't want Wally to change his name--they want him to shave the porn stash

Now that's a porn name.

Maybe if he did the latter he would be less uptight.

Primey for #7.

I'd take Backman over Melvin without a second thought.
