Big Air is coming to the home of the Braves

ATLANTA (AP) — Big Air is coming to the home of the Braves.

The high-flying ski and snowboarding event will be held Dec. 20-21 at SunTrust Park, bringing some of the top athletes from the United States and around the world to compete off a 15-story-tall tower that will be built in the center of the 41,000-seat baseball stadium.

The Braves joined the U.S. Ski & Snowboard federation in making the announcement Thursday from the plaza beyond the center-field seats, shortly before the start of Atlanta’s game against the Washington Nationals.

It was hardly a winter-like day.

Do you suppose Cobb County would have wasted all that money on the stadium if they were told this would be typical of the events available for it other than the Braves?

I get that you try hard to be really edgy and cool, but I don't even know what this means. Is there something wrong with a skiing/snowboarding event? Is there something that would be better in late December?

In Atlanta? I can't possibly imagine anything...

So they're not signing somebody whose nickname is Big Air? I was hoping Frank Thomas had a son who struck out a lot or found reasons to jump really high during baseball games.

It would seem to have a better chance of success than this.

I would assume that whatever ski/snowboard association schedules these things purposely does so in climates where they would need to create everything artificially, so as to have better control over the environment.

I'm not a skier/winter sports enthusiast - how good is fake snow these days? Seriously good enough to have a skiing/snowboarding competition or exhibition on nothing but it?

Fake snow was used almost exclusively in the last Winter Olympics, and I"m sure the one before that.

Big Aristides Aquino has already visited SunTrust Park. He hit his first HR there, actually.

I hate that blue paint they use on the snow on the ramps in the winter olympics; it makes the whole thing look like urinal cakes.

For stadium events, I don't even know how it would work with real snow. You'd build some ramps and moguls and other structures a few weeks ahead of time, then sit back and hope it snows exactly the right amount? If not, then what?

My understanding is that for many events, artificial snow (or at least a top layer of artificial snow) is actually required. Natural snow is just too inconsistent when trying to create equal conditions for all competitors.

And the one before that was in Vancouver. From personal experience I can say the only areas with snow during those Olympics were the venues.

When you guys say "fake" or "artificial" snow, do you mean some synthetic material, or just snow made with a snow-making machine, like ski slopes use?

Could be either, but I would expect that for events like this, they would use a synthetic material that doesn't melt above 0°C. (I have no knowledge of any such material, but I'm just assuming it exists.)

They did this at Fenway last year (or the year before maybe). I bought tickets for my friend’s son who is a big snowboarding/mountain climbing type. He said it was absolutely amazing. He had a blast. You watch these guys do it and it’s pretty impressive stuff.

YEah, what's with the intro. I'm sure they're thrilled to have any event that will draw an Atlanta crowd to their outdoor stadium in winter. What other event could they possibly have?

And even outside of winter ... this as opposed to wrestling? big trucks? a Bon Jovi concert? Trump rally? The stadium owners care about one thing -- how much are you willing to pay to use the stadium ... and in the case of Trump, whether he will pay his bills. (Yes, Obama and Hillary didn't always pay their bills either, chill out snowflake.)
