‘Big Boss’ era begins in appropriate fashion

In October, Shinjo was hired to be the manager of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, and he doesn’t go by his given name in his role. No, he goes by his new nickname in Japan, “Big Boss.” Wait, it gets better.

On Thursday, the Ham Fighters opened their 2022 season, and Shinjo made an appropriately boss entrance, complete with smoke, spotlights and a glow-in-the-dark sign flashing “Big Boss” across the front of his uniform.

The manager-showman then stood in the batter’s box for the ceremonial pitch, caught the ball on the fly and ran it back to the pitcher with his right arm raised triumphantly as if he had just snagged the final out of a World Series.

Yeah, this is one of those little unnoticed things in Correa's new deal too. April 7 should be interesting. You know, you gotta read the fine print or you end up with all sorts of weirdness.

Me gusta más la entrada de La Parka.

(Goes mildly NSFW in the last few seconds)

He had a pretty wild post-retirement career, living in Bali trying to become a motocross racer, was an underwear model, one $1 million on a Japanese game show.

Tsuyoshi Shinjo: where is he now?

What percentage of Japanese people can read Latin script? I've always wondered that. All their baseball teams seem to have it on their uniforms.

Where have you gone, Tsuyoshi Shinjo?
A nation turns it's lonely eyes to you
woo woo woo
What's that you say, Mrs Robinson?
The Big Boss has left and gone away
hey hey hey

Had to check to see whether a writer on MLB.com really called them the "Ham Fighters"...

#7 Of course. Even if you know the actual story it's nearly irresistible.

I wanted to make a longer post about the Big Boss regime because it’s fascinating to me, then he decided to enter his first home game on a hovercraft and my brain melted.

holy cow that hovercraft thing was not what I was expecting. that was INSANE. well worth the 59 seconds, check it out.

Needs a couple of guns attached so he can fire hams down on the opposing team.

I'm curious about what kind of manager Shinjo will be. He's the biggest hot dog in Japanese baseball, egocentric to the nth degree. During his playing career, when asked why he didn't steal many bases despite having good speed, he answered "because I have no interest in it." He's never struck me as a student of the game - will his managing style have any logic to it, or will it be totally off-the-wall? He may turn out to be great, but I'm glad this isn't my team doing this experiment...
