Big Spending Begins To Pay Off For AL West-Leading Rangers

In the 2021-22 season, they spent $500 million combined to revamp their middle infield by signing shortstop Corey Seager (10 years, $325 million) and second baseman Marcus Semien (seven years, $175 million) as free agent.

Yet the Rangers finished with a 68-94 record last season and manager Chris Woodward was fired with 48 games remaining.

The Rangers again made one of the biggest splashes of the past offseason by signing two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom to a five-year, $185-million deal…

While the Rangers wait for DeGrom to get healthy, they have risen to the top of the AL West on the strength of a relentless offense. Texas is averaging an MLB-best 6.33 runs a game with right fielder Adolis Garcia helping lead the charge with 14 homers and 49 RBIs – both AL-leading figures.

“They can hit, and I think you’re looking at a lot of professional hitters that know how to work counts and work at-bats,” said Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton, whose team lost two of three games to the Rangers earlier this week. “When you do that, you end up getting more mistakes. I think if you look at it on the large scale, when they’ve gotten mistakes, they’ve impacted the baseball and because of it, they’ve scored a ton of runs.

“It’s an old-school American League lineup. We talked about those lineups at the end of the end of the 2000s, beginning of 2010, 2011, and I can tell you because I was fortunate enough to coach some of those in Cleveland and Tampa where the guys hitting 7, 8 and 9 can do damage, too.”

"An old school American League lineup". That's a very evocative phrase for someone my age. It makes me smile

1. The Cardinals could use some of that offense.
2. Aaron Judge??? or does he qualify as a league of his own at this point in time?

Funny thing about Adolis is he only has a 125 ops+, he's not really in elite bat territory, but the Rangers have 7 regulars with 116 or better ops+ and two bench players with over 100 pa with 160 and 102 ops+ (heck even their only bad hitting regular has a 93 ops+

Money is like firepower. If it don't work, you aint usin' enough.

There's nothing quite like having your multi-million $ SS go down for half the season (to date) and replace him with 24-yo Ezequiel Duran who hits 301/340/515 in his absence.

Quiz time?

Current AL leaders

WAR
BA
OBP
TB
BB
SB
(Judge obviously leads in HRs and SLG and you were just told who leads in RBI). Tome of those would have taken me a lot of guesses.

Current NL leaders

WAR
BA
OBP
SLG
TB
HR
SB

NL HR is Alonso. SB Acuna. AL SB is the OAK CF with a strange first name beginning with E I think. NL BA is probably Arraez

NL BA is probably Arraez

If it isn't, either someone has gotten really hot, or he sucked up the joint the past week or so. The rest of your post are all names that have been making the rounds for the fact that they are leading, so it wouldn't be too much of a surprise. Although I think there is a guy in KC catching up in stolen bases (Witt?) since we just played him and he got one yesterday.

Is Acuna leading in War? and I have to assume Soto in obp based upon the article talking about player of the month. Last I looked Nolan Gorman was second in ops, (not that the question was asked) but not sure after yesterday who is where.

Well, I have to admit I was surprised to see who is leading the NL in SLG. He's a "big" name, but I had assumed he was on the decline. He hasn't really been on the leaderboards (except for 2B) since 2019.

#8 Me too. ... Some are close and may have changed today

** AL **
WAR
BA
OBP
TB (obviously not Judge or I wouldn't have asked)
BB
SB Ruiz

** NL **
WAR Acuna
BA Arraez
OBP (not Soto)
SLG
TB
HR Alonso (also RBI)
SB Acuna

I cheated on the obp for the nl, and the difference between Soto and Arraez is small enough.

Sorry, didn't mean to leave y'all hanging on the least engaging quiz of all time. :-) I find it interesting that things I would have always known in the good old days -- BA/HR/RBI -- I barely pay attention to ... but apparently back to being old and jaded enough that I'm not all that on top of WAR, OPS, etc. either. At the time

AL
WAR Franco
BA Bichette
OBP Diaz
TB Bichette
BB Rutschmann
SB Ruiz

NL
WAR Acuna
BA Arraez
OBP Arraez
SLG JD Martinez
TB Freeman
HR Alonso
SB Acuna
