Blue Jays add ex-Astros GM Click to front office

Prior to joining the Astros, Click spent 15 years with the Rays, so he brings with him experience from two of the most progressive (and successful) front offices in baseball. With Tampa, Click rose to the role of vice president of baseball operations. Joining Toronto’s ever-expanding front office group, Click’s role will be far-reaching.

“In this role, Click will join the baseball operations leadership team, working closely with general manager Ross Atkins and department heads on strategic planning, decision making and evaluation,” the Blue Jays said in a release. “He will work across both professional and amateur levels to identify best practices, develop plans and implement strategies.”

Click, who joined the Astros’ organization after their sign-stealing techniques of 2017 and ‘18 were exposed in November 2019, played an integral role in retooling the rosters that won the World Series in ‘17 and fell just a game shy of winning another in ’19.

During yesterday's SNY Mets telecast, Dusty Baker was mentioned and I think it was Keith who claimed that "only Dusty" could have taken over the Astros after the sign stealing scandal and deliver another title to Houston. Naturally, no one uttered Click's name.

Yeah, it's not a great role. It's a paycheck. One of the top 30 jobs is hard to get and harder to hold

I was hoping the Red Sox would hire him for something similar, but they don't seem to be trying to win these days so I guess there was no point.

#1 ... there might be a bit of truth to that. As we seemed to mostly agree around here, an "old schoool" "no nonsense" manager was the perfect PR choice for that job, immediately lending some credibility and keeping the scandal from being an everyday topic in the press conference. I don't think Dusty even had to pull out the"I'll fignt anybody who suggests I would stand for that" line. Now whether Dusty would win after papering over the scandal or would be replaced then they would win was up in the air. But it's feasible that if they hadn't hired Dusty, the aftermath would have gotten so messy that they wouldn't have returned so quickly to the top. So I suppose I'm OK with "Dusty was the perfect PR choice and, without a good PR choice, this team wouldn't have returned to the top" more than I am with the idea that Dusty was the only guy who could have done both or that it was necessary that the same guy do both.

They must have made the job posting listicle or a slide show. The Clickbait worked.

Yes, Dusty was a really good choice post-scandal, with or without the results that followed, given his reputation in the game. That they won a WS and another pennant makes it look more inspired, but it's hardly true he's the only guy who could have managed that.
