Blue Jays adding Chad Green on 2-year deal (source)

Chad Green is heading to the Blue Jays on a two-year deal, a source tells MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson. Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reports the deal is for $8.5 million, with options for 2025 and ‘26.

Toronto has not confirmed the deal—although Green’s agency posted a tweet about it—which is notably structured to accommodate Green’s timeline for a return from Tommy John surgery, which he had in early June of last season.

The right-hander, who turns 32 in May, was having another solid campaign before he departed the Yankees’ May 19 loss to the Orioles with forearm discomfort. The unfortunate surgery prognosis was made public a few days later. He finished the year with a 3.00 ERA in 15 innings pitched.

So $8 for about a half-season rehab period and a hopefully full 2024. He's been quite good and consistent so this deal looks good enough. If he'd been healthy in 2022, he'd probably have gotten something like 2/$20 so 1/$8 for 1+ seems a reasonable gamble. The options are nice assuming they are around this same price.

Still seems a slightly odd deal for the Jays to me. They're a playoff team, I'd think they'd want guys who are expected to help them all year. It will be nice to add Green mid-season (assuming he's healthy) but this deal is more about 2024 than 2023 and the Jays seem like a team that should have a laser focus on 2023, especially since the Yanks didn't do much and the O's will start charging soon.

This is a really nice deal for Toronto unless the options are really high numbers.

Toronto wants to be good for their young core's peak and 2024 is important too.

I suspect the Jays see it as a mid-season trade for a solid reliever except at a cost of just cash, not prospects. Unlike the past 2 years when they dealt prospects for relief help. Well, it did cost Matt Gage (DFA) but that is hardly a major loss.
