Blue Jays forced to remove pitcher who wasn’t on umpires’ lineup card

A clerical error compounded by a possible umpiring error cost Jacob Waguespack an opportunity to pitch for the Blue Jays on Thursday night.

The right-hander was on Toronto’s 28-man roster for its game against the Braves in Atlanta, but he wasn’t listed on the lineup card that was transmitted to the umpires beforehand. When the Jays called upon him to relieve starter Nate Pearson in the sixth inning, home plate umpire Alan Porter, who had the lineup card in his possession, consulted with third base umpire Marty Foster. The two eventually told the Jays that Waguespack had to leave the game.

Per 4.03(c), there is some discussion elsewhere that "player" and "pitcher" are different in this case.

Nevertheless, the umpires failed to follow the rules according to 4.03(d):

The umpire-in-chief shall make certain that the original and
copies of the respective batting orders are identical
, and then
tender a copy of each batting order to the opposing manager.
The copy retained by the umpire shall be the official batting
order. The tender of the batting order by the umpire shall
establish the batting orders. Thereafter, no substitutions shall
be made by either manager, except as provided in the rules

According to Montoyo and Snitker, their versions of the lineup card DID have Waguespack listed.
