Blue Jays land Berríos for 2 top prospects

Ahead of their first game back in Toronto on Friday night, the Blue Jays officially acquired right-handed starter José Berríos from the Twins, sending shortstop/outfielder Austin Martin, who is Toronto’s No. 2-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, and right-hander Simeon Woods-Richardson, ranked No. 4, to the Twins in exchange.

Berríos, 27, is under team control through 2022 as an arbitration-eligible player.

Dammit.

My mental model for a Berrios trade was a ~50 FV prospect and a couple of 40-45 guys who the FO liked. This return blows that out of the water. Berrios gets a little overlooked since every discussion about him has to start with, "while he's a true ace..." Since the start of 2017, he's 18th in fWAR for pitchers. He's stability is a major asset that many other great pitchers don't have. He's a great value for this year and next. I had hoped the Twins would extend him with a slightly better Wheeler offer. However, the bidding war that seemed to ignite made it worthwhile to make the move. Martin is a very exciting prospect and someone who seems like he can contribute even if he only hits his 40th or 50th percentile projection. I'm really hoping he and Royce Lewis form a Martin & Lewis keystone. SWR looks more mid-rotation than ace to me, though the strikeout spike this year is encouraging if he can get the command back in order. Overall, between the Cruz and Berrios trades, the Twins' pitching pipeline looks so much more promising than it did a few months ago.

With Kepler, Polanco, and Arraez already established (maybe add Garver to that list), Kiriloff, Larnach, Jeffers, and possibly Gordon adding to that nucleus, and Lewis and Martin not far behind, there's a cheap and promising offensive group. The pitching is a little further behind in development, but SMR, Balazovic, Duran, Ryan, Enlow, Strotman, and Sands give them an abundance of options.
