Bobby Knoop retires from Angels after 53 years in baseball

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Longtime Angels player and coach Bobby Knoop has announced his retirement after 53 years in baseball.

Los Angeles shared the news in a release Tuesday.

The 80-year-old Knoop was one of the Angels’ first recognizable figures, earning the club’s MVP award four times in its inaugural decade. The second baseman played for the Angels from 1964-69, making an All-Star team and winning three Gold Glove Awards as part of a double-play duo with Jim Fregosi.

Part of my education, as he was an exception to the rule that the "k" is silent.

Or that 'oo' is actually pronounced 'oo'.

Did he take 10 years off? It's been 63 years, not 53 years, since he debuted in the minors in 1956. Yes, we're all getting old.

it was pronounced kin-OPP by the MLB announcers

Howie, yes, I was referencing that. I was building off #1. Writing it out in full: his name is the exception to the rule that 'oo' is pronounced 'oo.'

He also spent time with the White Sox and Jays, so the 53 is probably accurate.

I wasn't surprised to see he was born in the Midwest (in his case, Iowa). As far as I can tell, the silent K is the exception when it comes to last names in Indiana.

He's got nuttin' on Jimmy Reese...

Was he in "The Naked Gun" or am I misremembering?

If you were a kid when I was a kid you knew Knoop both for the funny name and the fact you were guaranteed to get one of his cards in every pack you bought (you can look it up!)

If we had cell phones in the '80's I would have videoed those two Angels coaches playing catch - can you call it catch if no one catches it? - batting a ball to each other. Reese was known to pitch BP by hitting fungoes to the batter so they might have been that far apart and maybe he was teaching Knoop to do the same.

Besides his cool name, I remember Knoop because he was great at turning the DP.
