Bobby Valentine loses close mayoral race to Caroline Simmons in Stamford, Conn.

Former big league manager Bobby Valentine fell short in his bid to become mayor of Stamford, Connecticut.

The 71-year-old Valentine conceded the election to Democratic state Rep. Caroline Simmons late Tuesday night in what ended up being a close race decided by absentee ballots.

“It’s time for me to congratulate the new mayor of Stamford, Caroline Simmons,” Valentine wrote on social media. “Thank you all for your support, it’s been my honor.”

Bobby Valentine loses, the Braves win, what is this, 1999?

Coincidentally, I'm listening to the hits of 1999 right now. Lotta country, some rock, some hip-hop. (I've acquired mp3s of all the hit records since 1890 and have been listening to them in my car since 2016. I pretty stopped paying attention to pop music in the mid-90s, so this has a bit of an eye-opener for me.)

EDIT: I had to sift through several websites to find the actual results: Simmons beat Valentine by 15,565 to 14,060 (52.5-47.5%). (Stamford's not some little burg; it's got 129,309 people.)

that is one helluva long road trip...

as for Bobby V, his namesake restaurant just got sports betting kiosks last week so there's that

Voters may have been confused by the presence of a third candidate on the ballot, Vobby Balentine, who bore a striking resemblance to Valentine if not for Balentine's plastic glasses and moustache.

No, Stamford is no little burg. But it’s one of the richest cities in the nation. Full of multimillion homes and hedge fund CEOs. I wouldn’t think Valentines bedside manner would go over well with the toffs.

I guess that's a wrap on his political career, then.

Great to see the concerned citizens turn out in droves with a whopping 25% turnout for the election.

Bobby was actually up in the polls til he brought in Armando Benitez to close out the campaign.

Of the city’s 74,085 eligible voters, 30,156 voted, according to preliminary information posted to the Secretary of the State’s website.
In the interest of sabermetric accuracy, turnout was 40.6% as cited in the Stamford Advocate. That's quite high for an off-year mayoral election.

Ah #10, you and your facts got in the way of my bad joke in #8.

They're all in Greenwich. Stamford is relatively low end for Fairfield county.

that was a key aspect of the campaign.

the winner was a Greenwich-er who went to the usual private schools, and Bobby V tried to paint her as out of touch in trying to handle a more diverse community like his beloved Stamford.

You mean, what were my favourite songs of the mid-90s? Or 1999? Or ever?

I guess I mean 1999 & the stuff that is new to you but have come across from around 1999

The mid-to-late 90s were my HS/college years, so I obviously love tons of music from that time period. I'd be interested in what stands out to new ears.

I was recently thinking about which album I've listened to the most in my lifetime (function of when it came out, and have I ever gotten tired of it), and it's probably Weezer's blue album.

If you travel due north from Stamford, the next state you reach is New York.

If you travel due east, south, or west from Stamford, the next state you reach is New York.
