Boston Globe Red Sox reporter Nick Cafardo dies after suffering apparent embolism at spring training

Long-time Boston Globe columnist Nick Cafardo died Thursday at the Red Sox spring training facility after suffering an apparent embolism, the newspaper announced.

Cafardo, 62, worked for the Globe since 1989 and was at jetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Florida, as part of The Globe’s Red Sox coverage. According to The Globe, members of the Red Sox medical team attempted to revive Cafardo when he collapsed. Cafardo chose to report to the team facility on his day off, compelled by his “love of baseball and commitment to his craft,” according to the paper.

Wow. Sad to hear. I always liked him, fwiw. At least he picked a nice venue to spend his last hours.

I've known a couple of people who had personal interaction with him that said he was a good guy. He certainly always came across that way in print and on TV. Maybe not the most dynamic guy but a guy who loved baseball. It's a sad loss.

Tried to read his baseball notes in the Sunday Globe every weekend and they were consistently a high example of the craft. RIP.

This has been a rotten February. On a personal note, my 47-year-old sister died earlier this month after a battle with cancer.

Wow, 62 is young. I'm nearly 55 and not far off.

Condolences to his family and loved ones.

4--sorry dude. Cannot even guess how hard that was.

Thank you for your condolences.

Poignantly enough my sister, who lived in upstate NY, was receiving treatment at the Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, and she died at a hospice on the outskirts of town.

Andrew I’m so sorry for your loss.

Dan Shaughnessy’s column about Nick is worth the read.

At least he picked a nice venue to spend his last hours.

Heading to the Nationals Spring Training in West Palm Beach next week, so I'll keep that in mind, since I'm [slightly] older than Carfado was. Gives one some pause.

Only a sporadic reader of Cafardo, but he seemed pretty good at his craft. R.I.P. And re: #s 4 & 10: so sorry for your loss.

Not a bad way to go but way too early. I enjoyed his writing

I was only acquainted with Nick -- I'm in the Reds press box the most, so I know the NL Central beat guys the best -- but everyone I've talked to that was close to him today was absolutely devastated. That it was so sudden makes it hit even harder.

Awful to hear about.

The Globe’s Peter Abraham, who shared an apartment with Nick every spring training, said, “One of my favorite memories of Nick is from that 18-inning World Series game last October. As it went on and on, every inning, Nick would turn to me and say, ‘Isn’t this great?’ ’’
