Boston Herald: ‘Psycho’ sought for Sox gig

and most Red Sox fans will be arbogast at the idea!

This is supposed to be on the DL, but we hear that Entercom is making a pitch for deposed Fox Sportscaster Steve “Psycho” Lyons to join the Red Sox radio broadcast next season. “They want to make him the RemDawg of radio,” said Someone Who Knows.

...“The good thing for me is that the public outcry they expected backfired on them,” Lyons told the Track. “There was outcry. But it was in my favor. People who actually saw the game know I didn’t say anything wrong.”

Psycho, who won two Emmy Awards for Fox Sports during his 11 years with the sports cable channel, said he’s had “a preliminary conversation” with an Entercom suit about sitting in the Sox broadcast booth with Joe Castiglione. Joe’s partner, Jerry Trupiano, is expected to be waived next season and Jerry’s presumed successor, former PR guy Glenn Geffner, also is said to be fading from favor.

Remy's an insightful analyst who's likeable and has decent chemistry with Orsillo. Steve Lyons is horrible in every possible way. Remdawg of radio my ass.

Remy's not really that insightful anymore and is becoming very obnoxious with the incessant plugging of Remy crap. I don't think his chemistry with Orsillo is anything to write home about either. It's not a patch on prime McDonough/Remy chemistry.

I don't know who has the final decision, the Red Sox or Entercom, but Castiglione would probably kill Lyons at some point. Terrible, just terrible. They should have bit the bullet and fired Trupiano a few years ago and hired Dave Flemming.

Lyons is under contract for the Dodgers next season Lyons and Dodgers.

He was happy enough to accept the renewal after Fox fired him - now he's thinking of ditching that contract to do another team's broadcasts?

Unless the Dodgers have privately encouraged him to look elsewhere, it doesn't say much for him - if he didn't want to stay with the employer who actually kept him under contract, why did he agree to it rather than let them start their search right away?

Well, he's only broadcasting 40 games a year, basically all the away games that aren't in the NL West or at home for interleague. It's not like he couldn't do both gigs.

And, speaking as a Dodger fan, please, Boston, take him.

I said in the Lyons thread that this would wind up helping his career.

People who actually saw the game know I didn’t say anything wrong.

I heard the broadcast. It was more "dumb" than "wrong."

How come Eck just does pre and postgame on NESN? He'd be good in the booth, be it TV or radio.

I half-suspect he's doing all the work he's interested in doing. NESN doesn't see the need to employ more than two announcers, so he won't be working games for them (although the idea of an Eckersley/Remy booth makes me smile a lot). I seem to recall that he was doing radio for Oakland at some point, but opted to take the job close to where he lives in Massachusetts instead.

Crying shame, because he has done some fill-in work both on NESN and Sox radio, and he was terrific. It's not often you hear someone working for the team-owned cable channel sputtering that he has no idea what is going through the manager's head.

I believe that's right, and that he's been asked about it and that's the answer he gave. I think Eck still has fairly young kids in the family (teenagers), and of course a wife.

When Lou got the Cub job WSCR interviewed him and he said he had no problem with Lyons or the remark.

Piniella had nothing but kind words for Lyons.
