Boston Red Sox acquiring outfielder Kyle Schwarber from Washington Nationals, source says

The Boston Red Sox are acquiring outfielder Kyle Schwarber from the Washington Nationals, a source told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers on Thursday.

Schwarber is batting .253 with 25 home runs and 53 RBIs. He’s currently on the 10-day injured list because of a right hamstring strain.

In June, Schwarber was among the hottest hitters in the majors. He bashed 16 home runs that month, seven of them leading off games. All were critical for the Nationals, who went 19-9 in the month to turn their season around.

Can he play first?
Incidentally, he has a .976 OPS against righties and .736 against lefties this year.

Schwarber was acting as bench coach for the COVID depleted coaching staff of the Nats, at least according to the Phils announcers.

From my limited observations, Schwarber isn’t an awful outfielder - he’s OK on what he gets to, even if it’s somewhat less than desired. Might be interesting if he ever ends up a full-time DH somewhere. Maybe J. D. Martinez is a slightly better fielder these days, but my guess is there isn’t enough difference that Boston would want to put both players in new roles this late in the season.

Workman DFA to make room for him.

He's never really played 1B, I don't know if he's ever seen a live groundball in a game, so while he can probably learn 1B, you don't want to plunk him down there this season. He's also not that tall so not exactly a classic 1B.

EDIT: I agree he's a decent OF, good arm for a LF, seems a reasonale fit for LF in Fenway.

EDIT2: And the splits go beyond this season: 873/665 career. He really shouldn't be used against LHP. OK, you never know, 736 is just fine and he was 756 in 2019 so maybe he's figured it out.

Tell him, Wash.

Someone on Twitter made the point that the Sox getting Schwarber is worth it just to hear Boston fans pronounce his name.

It's weird that they got Schwarber just at the moment that their outfield seems kind of settled as Verdugo/Duran/Renfroe. Maybe Duran goes back to Paw^H^H^H Worcester, or maybe while we talk about the one batter where Schwarber stood at first base with the Cubs, we note that Renfroe apparently appeared there twice last year.

I pronounce it "shwore-brrr."

In semi-related news, Franchy played first base the other night and wasn't terrible. Anyone can play first, shoot I used to. The hardest part is thinking of stuff to say when a guy gets on base for the third time...

I pronounce it "shwore-brrr."

But to the rest of us it’s sounds like “Schwa-ba”….
