Boston Red Sox fire first base coach Tom Goodwin, say it’s unrelated to vaccination status: ‘It was a baseball decision’

Red Sox first base coach Tom Goodwin won’t return to the organization in 2022, chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom announced Monday.

Goodwin, who played for six teams in parts of 14 major-league seasons as an outfielder, had been a member of Boston’s staff since Nov. 2017. Most recently, he was not allowed to be with the Red Sox for the postseason because unvaccinated individuals were not allowed to access the playing field. Quality control coach Ramon Vazquez coached first base in Goodwin’s place for the final week of the regular season and playoffs.

Bloom said the decision to fire Goodwin was strictly based on performance—and not his decision to remain unvaccinated against COVID-19.

“His vaccination status had nothing to do with this decision,” Bloom said. “It was a baseball decision.”

In addition to coaching first base, Goodwin also coached outfield defense and baserunning for the Red Sox. Both of those areas struggled at times in 2021.

“His vaccination status had nothing to do with his firing but strangely enough we now have 100% of our team and front office vaccinated. With any luck at all he will lose his social security, his medical coverage, his ability to get gainful employment and will die on the side of the road along with all
the other deplorables. We wish him well in his new life “

"We wouldn't want Tom to suffer any consequences for his choices, so we kept him on. Also, one of our players has myocarditis and the family member of a staff member is dead."

I mean, other than Christian Arroyo, Chris Sale, Josh Taylor, and several others, sure, they're at 100%.
