Boston Red Sox release outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr.

The Boston Red Sox released outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. on Thursday.

Bradley, 32, rejoined the Red Sox after the team acquired the outfielder and two minor leaguers in a December 2021 trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, giving up slugger Hunter Renfroe.

He was hitting .210 with three home runs and 29 RBIs in 92 games for the Red Sox while making $9.5 million this season.

“We were hoping, offensively, it was going to be a lot better than last year,” manager Alex Cora said. “He had some stretches at home that were good. Obviously, he struggled toward the end. We weren’t able to get him to be consistent hitting the ball the other way. This year, there weren’t too many strikeouts. But toward the end, there were a lot of ground balls to the pull side. Offensively, it just didn’t work out.”

Boston Red Sox release outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr.

So Didi and Jackie both go to the Cardinals, each hit .350, and lead St. Louis to the World Series, right...?

I don't know about Didi, but I could certainly see JBJ hitting .350 the rest of the way out; .175 in August, .175 in September.

Although he's only stating the obvious, Cora is not going to be a fan among players if he keeps talking so bluntly about their failures. A simple "it was great having Jackie here, he's a true professional and a great presence in the clubhouse, we wish him the best" will do.

Is he free? If a team picks him up, do the BoSox pay the salary? The A's may be interested.

A team that picks him up pays the (prorated) minimum, while the BoSox pay the original contract minus that. A release differs from waivers; a team acquiring a player via waiver takes on the entire existing contract.

man--it's been 12 years since he won the MOP in the college world series---he was my favorite college player ever--I've never seen a more intuitive outfielder that young

In fairness, Cora didn't kick JBJ in the tush until he was already out the door. ┐(ツ)┌

As basically a free MLM guy with a good defensive rep (though given the sparse playing time I'm not sure how it is of late compared to c. 2019), I could see the A's kicking the tires on him, sure.

He's a lefty who can handle right field. I could see the White Sox taking a flyer.

It was bound to happen and it wasn't a great trade that brought him back, but very nice career for Bradley if this is it.

He's the prototypical 4th or 5th OF. Any team who needs one of those should grab him. He just can't be allowed to play more than 1/5 of the time (if that much, even).

Had to read this a couple of times to realize you weren't suggesting JBJ go locker-to-locker telling everyone in the clubhouse if they enroll just 5 friends and former teammates and help those 5 each enroll 5 of their own, that they'd enjoy passive income for life to supplement their baseball salaries and let them enjoy travel, luxury cars, and diamond jewelry.

If the Cardinals had room on the 40 man roster, I would have been fine with them grabbing him. Although Dickerson and Nootbar have both been playing decent recently so there might not be a spot for him.

I suppose the Yanks could use him until Bader is off the IL.

Jackie Bradley Jr. was on deck when Whit Merrifield hit the CWS-winning hit for U South Carolina over UCLA.
They're suddenly both teammates again in Toronto.
