BPP: Womack: My curiously long interview with Joe Posnanski

POZ! (now if the Rockie announcers would just leave him alone)

Me: What do you love about baseball research?

Posnanski: To me, I think it really plays on my imagination. I love baseball, love the history of the game. There’s no way for me to go back and see Babe Ruth play or see Lou Gehrig play or Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle, these guys. But I can go look at their numbers. I can really try to kind of break down and see what it was that drove them, how they compare with other people. Obviously, there are so many researchers out there, statisticians out there, sabermetricians out there that are just a million times smarter than I am and have done all this incredible research which I’d love to look at.

But part of it for me is just the fun of going and looking at the numbers and trying to kind of figure out, ‘Okay, what does this mean? And how does this work? And what are we missing?’ I think for a long time there was just a sense of watching the game for the pure enjoyment of the game, which I still love. But now, part of me, I’ve seen enough baseball and written enough about baseball that I really want to know how it works or at least try to get a little closer to how it really works, and I think the numbers give us a great opportunity to do that.

Posnanski's sh!t doesn't work in the postseason.

Posnanski too often sticks to his sycophant-laden fora and his above-it-all mien.

I happened to sit down in a pizza place at the same table Posnanski had just finished using. When my pizza arrived, I grabbed the parmesan shaker, inverted it, and PLOP!, the entire shaker contents crashed onto my pizza. That Posnanski, such a joker.

He also took the gun and left the cannoli.

What's wrong with that? I'd like to know.

Posnanski prefers Leno over Conan.

Posnanski didn't put the bomp in the bomp-chi-bomp-she-bomp, and as a result my baby never fell in love with me.

Posnanski still reads xkcd.

I was at game one of the 2000 NLDS, sitting down the third base line, when I saw Joe Posnanski creeping out from the Cardinals' dugout with a phial of what appeared to be Felbamate. I could see the concern paint itself onto the face of my father, the doctor.

"Felbamate..." he said. "Why, that causes dizziness." I didn't think anything of it.

I watched Rick Ankiel walk unsteadily toward the bullpen, but some time passed before I realized what had happened. I sent Mr. Posnanski an e-mail outlining my suspicions and he called my voice-mailbox the next day.

"A young pitcher succeeding is no human-interest story at all," he said, cryptically. I never heard from him again, and what's more, he never even wrote about Rick Ankiel. The man unnerves me.

Posnanski pronounces encyclopedia "encyclopAYdia"

Posnanski knows the difference between haiku and senryu, and won't hesitate to tell you the difference

Once, when I had a flat tire, Posnanski drove up, stopped, changed my tire, and gave me $20 for gas

Posnanski will give you the finger if he catches you using a Bluetooth.
Posnanski secretly digs Chris Berman's mustache.

Poz wipes his ass standing up.

Posnanski takes his kids to restaurants and lets them run around.

JoPo prefers living in the city and paying a small lady to do his laundry.

Poz thinks Olive Garden is a pretty good I-talian restaurant

Posnanski thinks Jeremiah is much better than The Wire.

JoPo thinks anybody that can waste a day arguing about LOTR, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Star Trek, or FireFly needs to get the hell out of their mother's basement.

Poz is pissed at Michael Vick because he bet on Vick's dog and it lost.

The unwritten rules of baseball used to be written, until Poz erased them.
   116. Hang down your head, Tom Foley Posted: September 11, 2010 at 07:17 AM (#3638656)
Posnanski will read this thread and realize one of two things: either Posnanski is comically infallible (which Posnanski is too modest to admit) or everyone who posts here is wrong (which Posnanski is too polite to say.) But he's Posnanski, so he has to write.

That will create a paradox, which can only be resolved by Posnanski. The Universe doesn't like having paradoxes resolved, so we'll all be torn apart in the most hideous way imaginable, except to Posnanski, who will imagine a more hideous way..

Thank you for dooming us all, Posnanski.

Posnanski is the only BBWAA member that has had Everest try to climb him...according to Jon Heyman (and an anonymous AL-Executive with knowledge of Everest's thought process), this attempt failed.

Posnanski will help a little old lady cross the street, but he'll shamelessly plug his new book while doing it.
   122. Damon Rutherford Posted: September 11, 2010 at 12:16 PM (#3638673)
Posnanski talked about Fight Club.
   123. Harvey Berkman Posted: September 11, 2010 at 01:34 PM (#3638691)
Posnanski plans to burn sacred books anyway.

This one time, at band camp, Posnanski showed up. Now band is the only thing that happens there, and it's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.
   125. HOLLA(R) Posted: September 11, 2010 at 02:54 PM (#3638718)
Posnanski produced 'Christmas in the Heart'.
   126. Kyle Lobner Posted: September 13, 2010 at 08:21 PM (#3639680)
Posnanski used to get together with Brian Bannister twice a week to have tea and discuss sabermetrics. Now that Posnanski is a big deal and Bannister is merely mediocre, they only have tea once a week. And they usually skip the tea, get drunk and prank call Murray Chass.
