Brandweek: Celebrity-Driven Spots Put Focus on MLB Playoffs

Ahh…Time to kick back on the hammock that’s hung between my strychnos nux-vomica trees…and wait…just wait.

Major League Baseball today breaks a celebrity-driven campaign that touts the upcoming playoffs and World Series, wrapped around a faux search for the “greatest postseason play of all-time.”

The first spot features Jeff Probst in a humorous takeoff of his role as host of Survivor, interviewing actors playing Derek Jeter, Kirk Gibson and Bobby Thompson. The entire four-minute spot can be viewed at Actober.com (MLB’s dedicated post-season Web site) and on YouTube. Shorter versions will air during MLB games on network and cable.

...Probst asks each why his particular feat is the greatest. “In 1988, Communism was unraveling in Eastern Europe, my knees hurt and we needed to win,” says Gibson. Thompson offers, “No batting gloves, no jewelry around my neck. I just stepped into the batter’s box and knocked it out.” Jeter is Mr. Humble, offering that the other two feats were better than his. In his favor, Gibson adds, “I was on a Wheaties box.” Jeter says, “I have four World Series rings.” Thompson proclaims, “I have a sandwich named after me.” Ultimately, Probst picks his own play, when he helped his team win the 1974 Little League World Series.

That Survivor skit sounds extremely lame. And the actor playing Jeter is pasty-white in that picture.

Who is Kate Mara? I had to look her up and I still don't know what she's supposed to be famous for.

Wellington Mara's granddaughter. She got a lot of attention for We Are Marshall, as they tried to push the football ties.

She also got some attention in Brokeback Mountain and 24.

Bobby Thompson?

Robby Thompson was a nice player, but I don't remember anything particularly notable about him.

Well, that's what you get for letting Gary Sheffield cast the ad

That spot is brutal as a beatdown and Derek Jeter should publicly denounce it. Loudly.

That spot was terrible in ways that I cannot describe with words. Let me simply say this: the spot made me want more Dane Cook.

Dane Cook is singlehandedly making me hate the playoffs already.

George Carlin. CK Louis. I guess they're cool. But I like my comedians more REAL!

Yeah, I have to flip the channel when that commercial is on. If they're going to show Dane Cook during every commercial break during the playoffs, I may not be able to watch them. I ####### loathe that guy.

Hey, I'm not saying I like Dane Cook. I hate the Dane Cook commercials. But comparatively...jeez, that is a stupid spot.

that "commercial" was the worst thing I have ever seen.

first of all dane cook is on great actor look at emplyee of the month and waiting and mr brooks with kevin costner. so in three years became on the a-list of actors and dane is in demand now, now he is shooting dan in real life with steve carrell. and he also worked with andy dick on employe of the month which was great by the way. and bob saget in farce of the penguins. so he worked with alot of great big actors. and was great in mystery men with ben stiller. and torque with ice cube. and dane was the best thing in the movie and the critics agree. so dane is a way better actor then george calrin. im responding to the post from shooty about at least george arlin got some credit under his belt but dane is hotter and a better actor and he is getting alot more movies then george. so please did you see carlins last movie with jay-lo called jersey girl. need i say more the movie sucked as hell and even the critics said the worst movie of the century. it only made 25 million in the theatres now thats sad.

Primey for #16. #13 would have been primey worthy had it gone all the way in the Chris Crocker impersonation.

Upcoming spots will feature James Caan, Ellen Pompeo, Kate Mara and William Peterson.

One of these things is not like the others...

William Peterson is the only one of them related to Bobby Thompson?
   20. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: September 19, 2007 at 07:48 PM (#2532201)
All but William Peterson have never been in my kitchen.

Kate Mara's the only one not starring in a TV show?
   22. flournoy Posted: September 19, 2007 at 07:53 PM (#2532211)
Horrible video. Did anyone even tell these bastards that Bobby Thomson's home run wasn't in the postseason?

It was in the postseason, sort of. It happened at the end of a three-game playoff between the tied Dodgers and Giants to determine who was going to the playoffs. Now, the stats counted as regular season stats, but that game happened after the normal 154-game season was over.

The other three are not nearly as cute as Kate Mara. She almost made Shooter something other than a huge waste of time.

(And James Caan doesn't have a TV show right now, either - he's been replaced on Las Vegas by Tom Selleck.)
   25. philevans3154 Posted: September 19, 2007 at 10:42 PM (#2532424)
Tom Selleck is replacing Jimmy Caan? No wonder NBC is the number four network.

James Caan nailed Edna Crabappel. Edna Crabappel!

Oh wait, what thread is this?

Guess it doesn't matter.

Yeah, this sucks!

Ellen Pompeo never starred in a sport movie.
