Braves add depth by signing Josh Tomlin to one-year deal

The Braves have reached a deal to bring Josh Tomlin back for the 2021 season, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. The deal is worth just $1M for next year, with an option for 2022 at $1.25M with a $250K buyout.

Tomlin, who just turned 36, spent the last two seasons with the Braves eating valuable innings predominately out of the bullpen. He was effective yet again in the shortened season with a 4.76 ERA, 4.02 FIP and better-than-expected strikeout numbers. He is who he is at this stage in his career — a versatile innings eater who can save the bullpen and even make a spot start if called upon.

Perhaps more importantly than his on-field contributions, Tomlin has served as a valuable member of the Braves’ clubhouse while working with young pitchers on the roster. Earlier this summer, Tomlin encouraged Kyle Wright to change where he stands on the pitching rubber and the results were immediate. Wright would go on to pitch well in the final weeks of September and in his first playoff start in Game 3 of the NLDS, tossing six shutout innings against Miami.

Seems like a perfectly cromulent pitcher for $1MM.

There's been a lot of talk about the Braves finances. Best guesses are they may look to shed $40M in payroll. Now, with Hamels coming off the books that basically just means they replace Ozuna with a cheap alternative and hope Soroka shores up the rotation. I'm not hopeful though that next year's team is as good as last year's was. Might've been their best chance to make a mark before the next rebuild.

Sounds great! What happened next?

Turns out he's no relation to Mike Timlin which would have been obvious if I'd remembered it was Timlin not Tomlin.

The Braves should have some room to play financially.

Expired contracts:
Cole Hamels $18.0M
Marcell Ozuna $18.0M
Mark Melancon $14.0M
Mike Foltynewicz $6.4M
Shane Greene $6.3M
Tyler Flowers $4.0M
Nick Markakis $4.0M
Darren O'Day $2.3M
Adeiny Hechavarria $1.0M

Raises for Swanson, Duvall, Acuna, and Albies will account for ~$15M or so.

Ozuna's departure, assuming the Braves don't re-sign him, is the only one that really creates a meaningful hole. How big that hole is depends on whether the DH is back in the NL or not. If not, then they're looking at an outfield of Duvall in left, Pache/Inciarte in center, and Acuna in right. Could use another guy or two, but I've seen a lot worse.

When do they make a decision on the DH? Surely it has to be soon. If not, that's completely unfair to every National League team that's trying to plan out a roster.

Also no relation to Randy Tomlin, who came up with Pit at about the same time as Timlin.

Also no known relation to Lily or Mike Tomlin.

No relation to Tam Lin, the seductive elf-man of Scottish folklore.

Owners got to budget for A/C bills now. That gets expensive in Texas summers.

If you don't activate them then they aren't on the 25/40-man rosters so are either eligible for rule 5 or become FAs (but you still owe them whatever you guaranteed them) -- I learned that the hard way in Baseball Mogul or OOTP about 15 years ago. There is no offseason 60-day IL.

I'd like to thank Tomlin for losing Game 6 in the 2016 World Series.
