Bregman becomes 7th Astros player hit by pitch in 5 games

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Houston’s Alex Bregman was hit on the back by a breaking ball from St. Louis reliever Ramon Santos on Wednesday, the seventh Astros player plunked in five spring training games.

“It was a splitter,” Bregman said. “It just got away from him.”

Some opposing players have called for retaliation against the Astros following Major League Baseball’s finding that Houston broke rules against electronic sign-stealing en route to its 2017 World Series title and again in 2018.

Dustin Garneau was hit Sunday against Washington, and José Altuve was grazed Monday against Detroit, when Osvaldo Duarte and Alex De Goti also were hit. Aledmys Díaz and Jake Meyers were hit Tuesday by Miami.

For those keeping score at home, if this rate holds throughout the regular season, it would equal 226.8 hits by pitch.

Just practicing pitching without pine tar. That’s what spring training is for

I worry that teams are wisely using spring training to express their displeasure and that once the games start to matter, they'll stop giving away baserunners.

If it's all intentional, the opposing teams aren't doing a very good job. Duarte, De Goti, and Meyers are all minor leaguers who haven't even made their big league debuts yet, and Garneau didn't join the Astros until this season. So at least four of the seven guys hit have had nothing to do with the Astros' scheme.

Here's a great case of trying to find a story where one doesn't exist. It's grapefruit league baseball, for cryin' out loud.

Yes. We aren't even told if that's a lot of batters for spring training. Maybe it is, I don't know. How often do batters get hit in the first week of spring training?

I dunno. I got a momentary enjoyment out of seeing him grab his back and wince in pain, and that's a lot more than I've ever gotten out of all the dumbass Plaschke and Simers and Mariotti columns that've been posted here over the years.

Oooh, I love a good narrative.

Let's see, I get hitting the cheaters, and the Reds, Phills and Cards all wear shades of red (Communists!) and all those teams at 4 are in California (also Communists!) but what did the Tigers do?

At this very moment, Trevor Bauer is working with Kyle Boddy on figuring out how to deliver a pitch at exactly the right velocity, angle and spin rate that it will actually go up Alex Bregman's ass.

They are a bunch of Juggalos

Unintentional consequence of having a distinct lack of team speed and agility which, if you watched my beloved Detroit Tigers try to play defense last year, was stunningly apparent...

Well surely the Yankees don't belong down there with all the other teams that don't really offend anyone. The rest of the league is really slacking off and NY needs to get beaned about 5 times in their next game to make things right.

Sorry, it would be an insult to hit a Yankee with a pitch before Jeter is inducted.

HBP are a sign of fear, of lashing out at things you perceive as threats. So yeah, nothing for the O's.

how about the Astros middle infielders drill a guy between the eyes coming to second base on a force play/double play, in one of these spring training games? Then perhaps the fielders will talk to their pitchers at throwing at Astro's hitters.

It's all in good fun, right, this throwing balls at one another? I wouldn't want only the Astros to enjoy the recipient end of the game.

By which, of course, you mean that they should ask their pitchers to throw at the Astros even more often, as a way of indicating that the Astros shouldn't do that ####?

It's probably more fun for the team that isn't a bunch of cheating pariahs, but they made that bed themselves, didn't they?

I don’t see why pitchers would throw at the Astros now. If pitchers were going to throw at the Astros, they should have done so back in 2017 when it might have made a difference...

Astros who weren’t on the 2017 team are being hit by first-week-of-exhibition-game breaking balls. Just a coincidence - if it was intentional, the major sign-stealing perpetrators would have been singled out. Similarly, the fans in WPB are saving their boos for the 2017 players and ignoring the more recent arrivals.

This would have been a very clever thing to post 4 hours previously, when the updated stats showing that the Astros were no longer the team to be most HBP, and so it probably was a brief statistical anomaly rather than a dastardly plot, hadn't been posted in the interim. Unless you think that the Cardinals had also been systematically cheating for years, but it wasn't yet known to anyone but the fringe prospects that are probably responsible for most of these HBP?

The Revenge Tour is expanding! Pitchers are after the Cardinals now over the hacking into the Astros files and Mark McGwire's juicing. Next up will be the Giants over Bonds, the A's over LaRussa's specialization of the bullpen, the Padres over those taco uniforms, and it will just keep going. Eventually the White Sox had better start ducking since they haven't paid enough dues over the Black Sox scandal...

And it wouldn't surprise me if there was a report of a drive-by beaning of Cap Anson's headstone for his role in creating the color line...
