Brett Cecil placed on 10-day injured list due to Carpal Tunnel syndrome

On Monday, Cardinals reliever Brett Cecil was placed on the 10-day injured list due to Carpal Tunnel syndrome. Cecil, who notably lost 42 pounds since the end of the 2018 season, was having trouble with his mechanics throughout spring training and only logged two official Grapefruit League innings.

Cecil, 32, is entering the third year of his four-year, $30.5 million contract. He struggled last year, finishing with a 6.89 ERA and a 19/25 K/BB ratio in 32 2/3 innings. The lefty dealt with shoulder and foot injuries during the season as well.

I’d suggest playing video games too much, but that’s how you gain 42 pounds, not lose them….

This feels like an excuse. He was terrible last year, lost 40 pounds, came into camp and was more terrible. Feels like they chose an injury which they can use as long as they need to.

2. He's only 32?? I feel like it's already been 10 years and about 6 team changes since he was a sneaky fantasy pick to vulture saves for several consecutive years in Toronto.

That particular signing wasn't bad luck, it was a ridiculously bad signing.

I recall the Jays' boards wanting to keep Cecil but when they heard what he signed for it was more like, "uh, no. If that is what it took, you can have him."

Well, he's listed at 6'3" 235 lbs, so he was probably up to 275.

Cecil supposedly weighed 248 last year. That qualified him as obese (barely, and for someone with an athlete's muscles BMI doesn't really work). Losing 7 pounds a month from that starting point sounds doable for a youngish athlete with millions of dollars and no other professional commitments.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a fairly common weight lifting injury, and could go along with a hardcore offseason training regimen. But he says he switched to Pilates this offseason, which shouldn't have the same effects on the wrists.
