Brian Cashman says Yankees must reevaulate at catcher after Gary Sanchez’s struggles, Kyle Higashioka’s breakout 2020 season

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday via Zoom, GM Brian Cashman was very frank in his answer about his catchers and what to expect heading into next season.

“I think it’s certainly a fair question obviously the way Gary Sanchez’ season transpired, and then the way it ended with Higashioka actually starting in the postseason as many games as he did,” he said. “I think it’s one of the discussion points we’re going to have to focus on.”

Sanchez truly labored this season right from the start going 0-for-15 in the five July games the Yankees played. He, then, posted a .155 average in August and .171 in Sept. and Oct. to bring it to .147 on the season.

“It was a struggle for him the first month of the season, just timing was off, chasing a lot, leaving the zone,” manager Aaron Boone said.

Boone added, though, that “it didn’t necessarily show up in the numbers” where Sanchez improved in front of his coaches. The Yankees believed he was putting together better at-bats and just not having luck on his side.

They don't make break-outs like they used to.

.198 xBA, Hit Pct of just 16

so yeah, he's really almost a .200 hitter with no glove - but HR!

You don't have faith in a guy whose BA of .231 over the last two seasons is still higher than his OBP?

Kyle Higashioka's "breakout season" consists of 16 games where he hit .250 with zero walks, plus five postseason games. He's 30 years old and now has a career batting average of .186.

Kyle Higashioka's last regular season walk came in 2018.

Well when was your last regular season walk vortex?

If only there was a free-agent C that a struggling team like the Yankees could afford ...

Or the Cubs are probably willing to swap 2 years of Contreras.

neither of these guys is the answer

Well if they are, then as the saying goes, you ain't asking the right question!

Well, the OBP isn’t there. As for the power, 75% of his homers and 50% of his RBI came in a single game against the Blue Jays. Seasons aren’t what they used to be. Thanks Covid.

But you guys are ignoring Higashioka's HUGE 14 PA breakout in the ALDS!!!!! Those were Sanchez 2017 numbers!!!!!

!!!!! (just for emphasis)

a caller on WFAN the other day said that the season-losing HR that Chapman gave up was all Sanchez's fault.

if Austin Romine showed in a non-COVID-universe bar in Manhattan filled with radio show callers, he'd never be able to open his wallet for food or drink.

if he was moving, 100 of them would show up at his house for no charge. Romine is worshiped like a god in this cult, and Higashioka is on his way to being The Next One.

Romine had a 73 OPS+ in his Yankees career and 58 for the Tigers last year.

the cult would transport him in a rickshaw or by pachyderm or whatever mode of transit Romine wanted back to The Bronx, and consider themselves lucky to have been in his presence.
