Can this World Series match the madness of the 1980 Phillies-Astros NLCS?

“That to me, it was probably one of the greatest playoffs ever,” then-Phillies shortstop Larry Bowa said recently on MLB Network….

Then came Game 4—one of the weirdest and wildest contests in postseason history.

There were five double plays turned—four started by an outfielder. There was a sacrifice fly that was then taken off the board when the Phillies appealed that the Astros’ Luis Pujols had left third base early. A fourth-inning triple play was even changed into a double play following a 20-minute argument among the umpires that led to both teams protesting the game.

Despite it all, when Philadelphia came up to hit in the eighth inning, the Astros held a 2-0 lead and were just six outs away from the World Series. The Phillies then scored three runs in the inning on four straight singles and, naturally, a sacrifice fly double play from Manny Trillo to take the lead, 3-2.

After Puhl hit an RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, fans were treated to more free baseball.

With two outs and Pete Rose on first in the top of the 10th, Luzinski doubled off the wall and Rose raced around third base, ignoring the stop sign, and collided with catcher Bruce Bochy at home to take the lead, 4-3.

“What I saw when I came around third was the catcher fighting with the throw,” Rose said at the time. “The throw wasn’t a good one. It would have been hard for anybody to handle it. So I went in any way I could.”

“He keeps saying that was the first time he ever missed that and ran through a sign,” Luzinski said on Wednesday, incredulous about Rose and his baseball instincts. “I said to him, ‘Well, it was a good time to do it!’ It was a game-winner.”

MLB Network showed game 5 of that series yesterday. I don't know what it is, but the players all seemed cooler then.

I submitted a similar article yesterday, but it never got posted. This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Does RoyalsRetro ever even look at those submissions?

The Astros and the Phillies in a Big Series? We’ve Seen This Before.

I can't look at other people's submissions, I can only submit my own.

if i've said it once, i'll say it a thousand times:

playoff baseball really suffers because joe buck is there to call it.

He doesn't anymore! I thought the coverage was really good this year. Joe Davis was really great.

Then who does look at them? Anyone? If nobody's looking at that "Submit News Item" link at the top of the page, then what's it even doing there? Just take it down and remove the pretense.

site maintenance is handled by the same person who reviews news submissions.

Fine, but who's that? And when does he actually review the submissions? Sometimes this site has the feel of a cable provider in terms of getting answers to simple questions.

It's a hell of a lot cheaper than Verizon though.

Jim can approve submissions so can I (though admittedly I don't look at it often), I think villageidiom can though I'm not 100% certain. I thought RoyalsRetro could but as he noted upthread he can only see his so I dunno?

Was Davis the guy working with Smoltz? I wasn't impressed though my recollection from past situations where I've heard him he was really good. Maybe Smoltz was dragging him down a bit.

Neither of the last two I submitted ever appeared. I asked Furtado about it via the site feedback page and also emailed him, but he never responded.

I like to imagine that NTNGod is still there approving submissions even though he never posts anymore.

That explains it. No point in making submissions to him.

Well, y'know ... ain't any of us forced to pay for this. There's like one unobtrusive ad at the top of the page which must generate nearly $20 a year in revenue. Jim's been "running" the site for 20+ years now. I assume he just doesn't put much time in anymore and who can blame him? I don't do the same "hey this is kinda fun and interesting" unpaid stuff I did 20 years ago either. He pops in every once in a while and posts a half-dozen threads -- it seems to coincide with days when Retro doesn't so I've been assuming they coordinate that. Granted, it would be nice if somebody wanted to volunteer to take on the keys reasponsibility ... and actually stuck at it for a few years ... so that we could all submit items, maybe it would liven things up a bit. But it ain't gonna be me.

So Jim keeps paying whatever server fees and does the necessary admin to keep the site running and posts a few things -- thank you very much Jim!

Retro (and others) post stuff to keep us talking -- thank you very much Retro and others!

Tom Boswell wrote a brilliant article on this series for Inside Sports called 'It Wasn't Pretty but It Sure was Fun"---it's in one of his anthologies

I sure wouldn't mind checking in once or twice a day and post newly submitted articles, and I don't think I'm the only one.

I don't know what it is, but the players all seemed cooler (in 1980).

And tinier. Today's players would snap these guys in half and not break a sweat.

I'm not necessarily delighted with the Series matchup this year, but I'm glad it has given people a chance to rediscover the 1980 NLCS; it's genuinely one of the greatest playoff series ever but isn't discussed as often as some of the others from the same period because it doesn't involve any of the '70s dynasties.
   21. Tony S Posted: October 28, 2022 at 06:01 PM (#6102996)
It was Gary Woods who allegedly left third too early in the fourth game, not Luis Pujols.

(You'd think that the extremely rare presence of Pujols on base would have triggered a fact-check.)

I thought he was vanilla...but he really pulled one out of the hat with "BRYCE HARPER...THE SWING OF HIS LIFE!" That's an all-timer.

Haven't really listened to Davis that much but have read great things about him. And he's Vin Scully's successor in the Dodgers booth, so that's pretty impressive, as is calling the WS at age 34.

Second the opinion of the Tom Boswell piece on the 1980 NLCS, one of his best.

his article was about the entire 1980 postseason and he started it out with (if you remember the German Shepherds lined up in foul territory in the bottom of the 9th in Philly) "the World Series ended with the strangest ground rule in history" 'attack dogs are in play'"

Scully made his first WS telecast when he was 25, sharing the honor with Mel Allen in 1953.
