Cardinals agree to deal with Adam Wainwright for 2020 season

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals and Adam Wainwright have agreed to a contract for the 2020 season, increasing the likelihood the pitcher will finish his career with the only major league team he has played for.

The 38-year-old Wainwright was drafted by the Braves in 2000 and traded to the Cardinals three years later. He made his major league debut in 2005 and has been a stalwart for St. Louis the past 14 seasons, going 162-95 with a 3.39 ERA and three All-Star appearances.

He played last season with a $2 million base salary and proved he remained effective, going 14-10 with a 4.19 ERA while helping the Cardinals reach the NL Championship Series. He earned $8 million in bonuses based on starts.

Wainwright was especially valuable down the stretch. He had a 2.97 ERA in September and a 1.62 ERA in the postseason, where the Cardinals were ousted by eventual World Series champion Washington.

this means he'll get to pitch against the Mets in 2020 - and new Manager Carlos Beltran, who had no chance against this rookie's 2-strike pitch that propelled the Cardinals into the WS and an eventual title.

Apparently Molina wants to keep playing after 2020, rather than retire as he said he would. His stated rationale for retiring was to not go out on a low note, so if he can still play, why not?

if he can still play, why not?

Because Molina's WAR the last three years have gone from 2.0, to 1.7, to 1.3, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's closer to zero in 2020.

At some point Knizner needs to get 300+ PA to see what he can do.

Yeah...that approach is basically guaranteeing he will go out on a low note eventually.

Molina was a perfect 6 for 6 in stealing bases last year. Wow. Did not expect to see that.

Neither did the catchers/pitchers he ran against.

I assume he was the back end of at least a few double steals.

That happened once. The other steals:

Twice - stole 2B with a runner on 3rd and 2 out. Other team probably let him take it so as not to allow the runner from 3rd to try and score

once - Stole 3rd on the FRONT End of a double steal.

once - stole 2B, no other runners

once - stole 3B, no other runners

Since 1900, Molina is 45th all-time in career stolen bases as a Cardinal.

18 Cardinals since 1900 have stolen 100+ bases, and Molina has 66.

He really didn't. The pitch closed in at eye-level and crossed the plate at the knees. Just filthy.

Cardinals as a team went from 63 steals at a 66% success rate in 2018, to 116 at 80% in 2019. Shildt put an emphasis on improving the baserunning, as well as the defense, and it really paid off.

Under C SB factoids, in 1999 Pudge Rodriguez stole 25 bases while allowing only 34 (and catching 41).

we did the same until we got to Senior League, age 12 and up. then we would try and nail the runner and/or catch the lead runner off third base.
