So, any thoughts as to the merits of this contract?

He was worth it last year. I wouldn't expect him to be significantly worse, but it seems like it's pretty generous considering it's really only 1 year of real success here. It's not like the Cards are hurting for money, so I even if he takes a step back this deal won't hurt them.

Probably means they're out of the Harper sweepstakes (not that they've been mentioned in a long while).

Hard to judge without some clarification. I'm not clear on what sort of service time arb/FA rules he's under. B-R says he would have been FA in 2020 and given this deal, I assume that's correct. In that case, they had him this year at 1/$8. The article notes this is the same deal Eovaldi got which seems fairly reasonable but it was signed a year early. Hard to know what to expect from him -- looking at his Japanese stats, he wasn't overly heavily used there (was he hurt?) so the arm should still be pretty fresh and obviously his performance over there was stellar enough that, combined with 2018, I've got to think he's a pretty good pitcher. He may have had a bit of BABIP luck but his FIP was still excellent last year.

I guess in the end, the Cards don't make a lot of big mistakes on contracts -- I know, that's a history that covers a few GMs, no particularly good reason to expect it to continue. But, from the team perspective, I always wonder if they picked the right time to jump the gun.

Yeah, Mikolas was going to be a FA after 2019. He was able to negotiate early free agency just like a few other international guys have done when signing MLB deals.

Mikolas has had a weird career. More than a few times last year I saw him referred to as a "rookie," though obviously he wasn't -- he pitched 90+ nondescript innings over parts of three seasons in 2012-14 before becoming a star in Japan in 2015-17.

How many other MLB starting pitchers have resurrected their careers in Japan? There must be some. A bit of research turns up Ryan Vogelsong. That's a reasonably good comp for Mikolas, but not if you're the Cardinals -- after an excellent first year back, he was pretty mediocre (but he was older than Mikolas and not nearly as good in Japan).
