Carl Yastrzemski knows it’ll be ‘emotional’ to see Mike play at Fenway

It took some time—longer than he would have liked—but Mike Yastrzemski finally is making a name for himself at the big league level.

Yastrzemski spent six seasons in the Baltimore Orioles’ farm system before the Giants traded for him in March. Since donning the SF orange and black, he has helped transform the Giants’ outfield from one of the worst in baseball into one of the team’s strengths.

In 74 games for the Giants, Yastrzemski is hitting .259 with 17 home runs, 47 RBI and an .890 OPS. His emergence with the Giants has made one person, in particular, very proud: His grandfather, Boston Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski.

“You know, the main thing is, he’s a great kid,” Carl Yastrzemski told The Athletic’s Steve Buckley. “He’s worked hard. He always thought he was going to make it and I’m very, very happy for him.”

Something very touching for me, for very personal reasons….

I've been looking at my calendar trying to see if I can make the first game at Fenway. I was at his grandfather's penultimate game.

Shouldn't you go to his second game at Fenway then?

It is a shame that Mike was blocked in a loaded Orioles system.

Happy 29th bday to Mike.

As I recall that was the actual "Yaz Day" and his final game (which I was at) was just that but a lot of the celebrations and stuff took place in that penultimate game. I am definitely going to make it for this game.

Mike Yaz breaking out is a big surprise, considering his age and never being a top prospect. I am happy that he was able to do it in the 1 in 6 year where the Giants make a trip to Fenway. Of course had he done this with the Orioles he’d have 3 trips to Fenway.

Very happy for grandpa too, he was one of my favorites as a kid.

Mike Yaz
M-Yaz should be the short form. Yaz-2 doesn’t work that well for a grandson, and Yaz-3 would have everyone wondering what happened to 2.

What did happen to Yaz2?

They broke up, and then the guy formed Erasure.

You should be jazzed just to watch Yaz the Younger in his own right. The dude came to PLAY!

Sadly he died right before the greatest World Series ever.

Indeed it was. They thought the final game would get rained out, so they moved all the ceremonies up a day.

I woke up cranky this morning.

DeGrom hit a HR last night. Batboys are hitting HRs during BP.

I like HRs, I draft my year long fantasy teams based on power, but this year...forget it. It's relatively meaningless. The ball is too tightly wound. If they fix it next year, M-Yaz won't hit more than 8 HRs.

Edit and PS:

So's your mom.

I got Yaz's autograph in 1984, right after he retired.

Do I feel ancient.

Opposite field.

There were also something like 35 strikeouts in the game vs 10 hits.

I got Yaz’ autograph in 1982 while attending the prestigious Jerry Remy Baseball Camp. Yaz showed up, stepped out of his Cadillac and every kid at the camp sprinted over and lined up. Yaz moved about 3 feet away from his car, signed autographs for about 45 minutes, got back in his car and left. I don’t think he said a word the entire time.

I still have it though.

You should get Yaz the Younger to sign that same ball.

Yaz the Younger
Maybe it should be like Tom Morris - the Scottish golfers - Old Yaz & Young Yaz, although I’m not sure folks in Jose’s age-group will readily adjust to referring to Carl Yastrzemski as Old Yaz.
