Carlos Correa addresses Astros haters after sweeping Twins: ‘What are they going to say now?’

“I know a lot of people are mad. I know a lot of people don’t want to see us here,” said shortstop Carlos Correa, who homered as part of a two-knock game, “but what are they going to say now?”

Correa’s frustration is understandable. It can’t be fun to have critics question the legitimacy of one’s accomplishments at every turn. The obvious retort, though, is that Correa and the Astros did it to themselves. Remember, this all stems from Houston’s sign-stealing scheme that led Major League Baseball to suspend both the club’s former manager and general manager, and to fine and strip the organization of draft picks. Yes, other teams were probably doing similar things, but the Astros got caught; that means suffering the consequences, such as public criticism.

I don't follow rasslin' - but I imagine this is part of the script.

"what are they going to say now?”

that you celebrated reaching the mediocrity .500 mark after 62 games and that further cements you as ##########?

I kind of want them to advance further - and WWE would insist on it.

I really don’t get the whole “rooting for [butt]holes because they’re [butt]holes” bit.

And are now thinking that winning 2 games in a row at an opportune time "vindicates" something.

To assuage Mr. Correa ... Worry not. Everybody agrees the Astros were one of the better teams of 2017 even without the use of shenanigans. The criticisms are along the lines of wondering how much of the separation between you and your 2017 teammates vs. the rest of baseball might have been due to shenanigans and the widely-held opinion that, whether they make a difference or not, shenanigans are shenanigans. Given you just completed the worst "season" of your career, I would suggest you might benefit from letting it go.

I am also really confused by it. There seems to be a whole, "But some people think they're bigger [butt]holes than I think they are, so I'm going to root for them to stick it to those people." It's some sort of weird double reverse schadenfreude. I feel like I could make a political comparison, but I better not.

As for Correa, you won two games against a team that hasn't won a playoff game in 16 years. One of those games was gifted to you on a late inning error. I wouldn't be strutting around the yard like you're the #### of the walk just yet.

That you are still a douche?

I'm always surprised Correa emerged as the most arrogant, unapologetic douche of the cheating scandal. I figured Bregman would fill that role.

Bregman won the award last year, this year is Correa's turn.

I am more likely to watch a random playoff series if I have a rooting interest - such as hoping the Astros get swept with four double-digit losses.

I'm not rooting for them, but it makes me more likely to watch. it's all just fun and games anyway.

It’s not clear to me the Astros were the best team in 2017 without the shenanigans. We don’t really know the extent to which they gamed the system. Some of the numbers this year indicate it was material but it’s hard to compare 3 years later. And I don’t believe at all that they simply stopped cheating in 2018-2019. Why would you ?

That it's just two games?

(edit: as the full article actually points out, it turns out... still though)

Yeah, Correa not doing himself any favors with this posturing. It's kind of like the guy who catches a 16-yard pass for a first down with his team down 20 points and gives a big first down signal. Just play ball, because nothing you do or say is going to change anyone's opinion about anything.

Are we calling winning a best-of-three series a sweep? Nobody would say that a team swept a one-game series. I guess my personal line would be a five-game series.

We do it in the regular season (there are sometimes 2 game series). Anything more than 1 is technically a series.

I thought it would be funny if they made it a complete 3 game series this week — so even if a team won the first two games, they’d still have to play the third game. It would be like an all star game or Pro Bowl, everybody trying not to get hurt. :)

Not to mention the entire NIT post-season tournament, and the CBI and the CIT as well - or almost the entire collection of College Bowl games.
   22. Howie Menckel Posted: October 02, 2020 at 10:47 AM (#5980529)
I like the NIT because now it gives automatic bids to teams that win their conference regular seasons.

that used to be brutal - 18-0 in your conference, 26-6 overall, but no NCAA bid and your season is over when you lose in the conference final in OT.

Probably because no one tipped him off as to what to expect.
