Castellanos On Comerica: ‘This Park’s A Joke’

DETROIT (97.1 The Ticket)—Nicholas Castellanos saw one pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning against the Blue Jays on Sunday. And that was all he needed to see to end the game, driving a Tim Mayza slider left over the plate into the bullpen—his first career walk-off home run and the Tigers’ fourth home win since the start of June.

It was Castellanos’ 11th homer of the season, just his 3rd at home. Of his 104 career home runs in six years, just 44 have come within the confines of Comerica Park. Surely, part of that can be contributed to the spacious dimensions of the Tigers’ home digs, one of the largest stadiums in the Major Leagues.

Following his walk-off on Sunday, Castellanos opened up on his feelings about Comerica, on a day where the depth of the field played in the Tigers’ favor, with the Blue Jays seeing several hard-hit balls swallowed up by the outfield.

“This park’s a joke,” Castellanos said. “It’s to the point where, how are we going to be compared to the rest of the people in the league for power numbers and OPS and slugging and all this stuff, when we’ve got a yard out here that’s 420 feet straight across to center field? We get on second base, third base, and (opposing players) looking like, ‘how do you guys do this?’ We play 81 games here, I don’t want to hear it about your two you hit that are questionable.”

I wonder how he would have reacted to seeing the Polo Grounds….

Comerica Park fans on Castellanos: 'This Guy is a Joke'

If I read the metrics correctly, Comerica is decently hard on RH batters for HRs, and easier than average on left-hand batters, but certainly easier (closer to average, on HR) than several MLB parks, on RH batters. It is by no means a joke; it is just a little bit harder, and with 30 parks, 1 has to be the easiest, and 1 has to be most difficult.

Interestingly, while Castellanos has hit significantly more HR on the road (60 to 44), he's actually been a better overall hitter at home (.286/.339/.470, compared to .264/.312/.454).

If only there was a way to adjust OPS and slugging numbers for park.

I think that can only be done in your mother's basement

Didn't they move in the left-field fence during the park's first season, when Juan Gonzalez was making the same kind of complaint?

Bring back the old Astrodome.
It's still (mostly) there.

Balls don't travel well in 6 inches of mold.

The actual Astrodome field is perfectly fine, taken the tour twice. It's all the other Infrastructure that's gone to seed - electric, storage areas, the upper deck facilities ...

It takes a long time for plastic grass to rot.

Castellanos .342/.480/.822 and a 115 OPS+ for Tigers

Urshela........347/.474/.821 and a 115 OPS+ for Yankees
Sanchez.......308/.526/.834 and a 115 OPS+ for Yankees

Altuve.........333/.492/.826 and a 116 OPS+ for Astros

Reportedly the Cubs have some interest in him (per Len & JD presumably quoting somebody). He's a RHB Schwarber (i.e. gives back with the glove anything he gives you with the bat) which the Cubs could kinda use but shouldn't be willing to pay anything for.

It's one thing when it's the guy you traded five players for who is barking about the park dimensions, but Nicholas Castellanos? In the immortal words of Conor McGregor: "Whoda fook is dis guy?"
