And he started the story after a bad call. I’d say the first base ump missing time out might also be down to that. Point is, after the game last night the umps didn’t get to their rooms until after noon.

They won’t be sharp tonight.

Jeremy, I hate Joe too. But you’re projecting.

He didn’t actually say he was on that plane. He said the umps and most of the tv crew was.

5 years from now when you play fantasy baseball you will choose pitching staffs like choosing team defenses in football.

And 20 years from now what will be the standard for Hall of Fame pitchers? Career K/IP?

Yankees made the trade of the year - have Hicks hit the foul pole for a 3-run HR in a 4-1 win in Game 5, and tradeoff is a near solo HR while down 3-2 early in Game 6.

reminiscent of the Chapman-Torres trade

Martin is putting on a class for framing

I actually kind of like Sanchez, but what is the deal with his holding framed pitches for like three seconds? It's really obnoxious. Like, if the ump didn't call it a strike your awkwardly jerking your mitt into the strike zone and holding it for three seconds isn't going to make him say "Oh, uh...that was a strike I guess?"
   932. winnipegwhip Posted: October 19, 2019 at 10:03 PM (#5892061)
If MLB did not have the rabbit baseball teams may be more patient with these pitchers. Currently they make pitching changes before pitchers get into trouble. The inherent fear that hitters 1 through 9 can drive the ball out of the park resulting in managing the pitchers with fear.
   933. Howie Menckel Posted: October 19, 2019 at 10:08 PM (#5892062)
re framing:

I have mentioned before, why would any catcher be able to rank high in "framing" in consecutive seasons?

given the umpires having 6 months off and lots of video to watch, it would be like going to a magic show every year and then getting fooled by the same sleight-of-hand every time.

once umps see that certain catchers make them look the dumbest - thereby perhaps risking their livelihood - then why give them borderline pitchers the next season, when you're liable to just play the chump again?

When has an ump ever had any consequences for his performance (short of physical contact with a player or manager)?

Possibly never. That said, I am a professional umpire, though I do nothing higher than HS games. I take pride in my work, and I am always looking to improve. I am never satisfied when I make a mistake, consequences or no.
Maybe MLB guys are not like that, but I like to think they are.

Oh, I have no doubt that the vast majority of umps absolutely try to do the best job they can (give or take an Angel Hernandez). I'm just not sure that extends to studying up on good-framing catchers, and I'm definitely sure there's no risk to the umps' livelihood.

I'd say guys like Don Denkinger and Jim Joyce felt consequences for bad calls. If not from their employer, directly, but consequences nonetheless. Perhaps these are the exceptions that prove the rule, though.
   939. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 19, 2019 at 10:25 PM (#5892069)
Urquidy's changeup is absurd. The fact that he's a marginal pitcher for the Astros is exactly why I'm critical of the Cubs.

I confess that is a strong counterpoint.

I still doubt they want to look so stupid - but when obvious incompetence remains irrelevant, it does limit that "get better" incentive for bad umps.

I still think this game is going to come down to which reliever gives up five runs before his manager can get someone in but the no-Names are, so far, acquitting themselves well.

From a personal standpoint, the thing I hate most about the MLB framing thing, is how it affects my job. HS catchers are completely unable to do competent framing. Every pitch is caught and moved into the center of the zone, no matter how far outside or inside. Which won't fool anybody. But when I call a strike on a pitch at the corner and the catcher moves it to the middle of the zone, I never fail to hear coaches or fans excoriating me for being fooled by the framing.

Yeah, I can see how that would be really frustrating. It's not like you can call time out and explain it to them (although it would be pretty cool if you did).

At this point in my career, if I hear it once from a coach, they get a warning. A second time and they are gone. Which costs them big $$, so they are on their best behavior afterwords. Fans I ignore. If it gets too bad, I summon the AD to have them removed.

But I hate that. I'm not there for confrontation. I'm there to fairly adjudicate a contest.

Mark Eichhorn almost did that in 1986.

If he'd thrown 5 more innings and gave up less than 19 runs in that time, he would have won the AL ERA title that year.

   978. bunyon Posted: October 19, 2019 at 11:11 PM (#5892116)
Looks like he mis-saw it. He was in a good spot but thought the ball fell and went to second after the catch. That did it.

Watching the replay, Judge was in no man's land. he stopped at second, meaning he likely would not have advanced to 3rd had it not been caught. But he went too far to get back if it was, obviously. He should have either stopped earlier, or kept running.

I think.
