Chas McCormick’s lack of playing time has some Astros vexed, speculating over weight

McCormick has appeared in 95 games this season despite batting .289 with 20 home runs.

Some, who spoke to the outlet, said they have been frustrated by his inconsistent playing time.

“No, why (would) you even ask that?” Baker replied on Wednesday when asked if McCormick’s weight was an issue.

“That’s something that you’re always aware of, you know what I mean. As long as it doesn’t affect your performance, then it’s not really that much of a concern.”

Baker did acknowledge that McCormick was playing with a little more weight on him this season.

The Astros outfielder said that he put on the weight during his stint on the injured list.

“I feel stronger. I like being this heavy,” McCormick said. “I guess if I was a little lighter it’d be easier, but easier to move a little better. I feel stronger. I feel healthier. I feel I can do more being at 220 (pounds). Usually, I’m at 216. When I’m 210, I’m too light. I was 214 last year, I think, and I felt too light again. I kind of like being where I’m at right now, at 220.”

220 -- those were the days!!

It is indeed a mystery -- 289/371/527, 144 OPS+, 3.6 WAR, DRS puts him slightly positive and so does statcast. Even if the defense was bad, since when does a 144 OPS+ not play. It would have been nice (or at least satisfied my curiosity, if Dusty had gone a bit deeper and explained why he isn't playing more. But it also looks a bit overblown -- it's 42 starts in the teams last 50 games. But it's also just 4 of the last 8.

My eyeball suggests it's a mix of trying to get Brantley some playing time at LF and DH to get him back ... which means that with Yordan in the lineup too that somebody has to sit. Dusty seems to be giving Dubon a chance to be the everyday CF (defense I assume). So the problem gets solved as soon as Brantley is hurt again which history suggests should be in about 37 minutes. Has it occurred to anybody to teach one of these guys to play 1B to get Abreu out of the lineup?

I can’t believe 5 lbs is the cause of anything.

This seems a lot more like some attempt by the analytics guys to push dusty out. Strange story

I am not an Astros fan, so I don’t get this impatience by some of their beat writers, like the author where it’s a crusade to anoint McCormick as the next superstar, if only Dusty wasn’t so dim witted, biased, disdainful of this young stud.

The article written by McCormick’s biggest fan, has spelled out McCormick has played a fair share and that Dusty Baker does have options, where he is not overusing McCormick, not burying him as these Astros beat writers would like all of baseball to believe.

McCormick is having his best season, so maybe Dusty knows how to handle him?

Maybe not Dusty specifically, but 6 straight ALCS appearances suggests to me the Astros know what they are doing. This does not get discussed enough. 6 straight ALCS appearances is really, really impressive. I am not an Astros fan, but geez you can't but admire what they do.

With a pretty good chance at a seventh.
