White Sox manager Tony La Russa is out indefinitely as he undergoes medical tests in Arizona, according to the team on Wednesday.
La Russa, 77, missed Tuesday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals after participating in regular pregame activities. Within an hour of first pitch, doctors advised him not to manage.
“We were trying to figure out what was going on,” outfielder Andrew Vaughn said. “They mentioned a few things, maybe his heart, or something like that.”
Bench coach Miguel Cairo will continue to manage until La Russa returns. He was at the helm for Tuesday’s 9-7 loss to the Royals, Chicago’s fifth consecutive defeat.
Cairo indicated that there was no incident after pregame which prevented La Russa from managing. Instead, it was La Russa’s doctors who reached out and told him to stand down.

1. The Duke Posted: September 02, 2022 at 06:47 AM (#6094151)If they don't, then of course that'll be Cairo's fault and oh if only Tony were here, but alas, his health has forced him into retirement.
And I was surely too pithy; it's a shortcoming of mine. Obviously not even Reinsdorf would say (or think, probably) "it's Cairo's fault." More along the lines of Miguel Cairo is a fine man and a fine manager, but he's not the legendary Tony LaRussa, etc.
Johnny Cueto and Vince Velasquez have combined for 3.8 WAR (all Cueto). Rodon is at 4.2.
If LaRussa resigned citing health issues, someone would check? But if we pretend LaRussa is sick so he can resign, no one will check?
The logic seems weird.
What sunk the White Sox?
Moncada 65 OPS+
Pollock 87 OPS+
Grandal 65 OPS+
L Garcia 300 PAs despite a 47 OPS+
Giolito 76 ERA+
Lynn 86 ERA+ (but much better lately)
They have been lousy at C, 2B, 3B and RF. Fair enough, the only one of those things that is directly LaRussa's fault is Leury Garcia's playing time and that might be more the lack of options provided by the GM.
Lynn's last 8 starts: 48.1 IP and a 56/4 K/BB. Getting killed on HRs and maybe getting BABIP lucky but still a 2.61 ERA, 3.66 FIP. But 56/4 is just crazy.
Rodon is going to get Cy Young votes - hard to believe the Sox didn't need more of that.
Joe Kelly's inability to throw strikes isn't precisely unprecedented but he was coming off two very good years (sample size alert though). That's done as much damage as a middle relieve can do as he was used a fair amount in high leverage situations and ... well a .417 OBP allowed isn't what you're looking for then.
"An intentional walk counts toward fulfilling the number of required batters."
The day before he was born, the St. Louis Browns clinched the American League pennant.
EDIT: Or to put it another way: LaRussa's birth is closer to the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings than it is to today.
And the winner eventually sweeps the Dodgers in the World Series.
