Chili Davis goes scorched earth: Mets are broken after ‘dismal’ stretch

“That organization needs a big turnaround, they need to clean house,” Davis said. “Some of the people that have been there so long during those dismal years, they need to bring some fresh faces and baseball people in there. To be honest, I don’t think Zack Scott was a baseball person. He was the head of analytics in Boston. He was an analytical guy. That’s where he belonged, in analytics.”...

“I was told it’s not about the results, it’s about the process,” Davis said. “Well, if the process doesn’t produce positive or good results, then the process is worthless, because it’s not a good process. The process is making your players better. It’s a bullcrap statement to tell me it’s not about the results, it’s about the process.

“How did the process work out [with Quattlebaum]? That’s my question. How well did the process work? It’s not about the results, so how did the process work, because everybody could see the results. There is a wine in Napa called ‘Brilliant Mistake.’ I almost bought a case of it to distribute it. Brilliant.”

Quattlebaum sounds like a character from a PG Wodehouse novel.

Wodehouse was a big Mets fan.

The cardinals just fired Shildt and one of the main criticisms I read was that the cardinals had Edman hitting first and Molina fifth. Do any managers (other than TLR) actually make out their own lineup anymore? I’m sure they have tons of input, but I would assume this is not the managers job anymore. Thoughts ?
   5. Tom is wrong when he calls you stupid Posted: November 07, 2021 at 01:14 PM (#6051790)
Most managers absolutely make up the lineup, but they have more data to tap into in the decision, and their thought processes are different. There are few micromanaging front offices any more, if the front office is making up the lineup then they have chosen the wrong manager.

There was a brief moment when teams had analytic front offices and old school managers, but that is no longer the case.

Whatever the problems, the Mets 35th choice for head of baseball operations should be able to do a quick fix.

I hope they consider the time difference before they call me.

Quattlebaum sounds like a character from a PG Wodehouse novel.

Or a WC Fields or Groucho character

main criticisms I read was that the cardinals had Edman hitting first

I know Edman had a bad .308 OBP, but what other choices did Shildt have?

Edmundo Sosa had a .346 OBP, but I'm not sure he had the grit.
Dylan Carlson had a .343 OBP, but he's a rookie, and when he DID bat leadoff, his OBP (.314) was almost as bad as Edman's.
Harrison Bader had a .324 OBP and the speed, but batting him 8th allowed him to get bunted over by the pitcher so you've got a guy in scoring position for the top of the lineup.

And then all the "good" hitters with better OBPs (O'Neill, Goldschmidt, Arenado) are obviously middle-of-the-order guys.

What's he supposed to do---put his No. 5 hitter Yadier Molina (.297 OBP, .370 SLG) at leadoff?
   9. The Duke Posted: November 07, 2021 at 05:48 PM (#6051816)
I would have bat Edman 1st because he either singled and stole second or hit a double. He was always on 2nd base.

My question is did Mike Shildt bat him first everyday against the wishes of the FO? I doubt it. I think they told Shildt where to bat these guys

Uh…what?

True grit, son.
Like Rooster Cogburn
   12. salvomania Posted: November 07, 2021 at 07:38 PM (#6051825)
Uh…what?

My entire post was facetious, but you might have to be a Cardinals fan to discern that.
--Sosa's not white, it seems only white guys get the label "gritty"
--Carlson's cherry-picked bad stat is still better than Edman
--Bader would be in scoring position "for the top of the lineup"---that would be Edman
--and Molina clearly wouldn't be moved to leadoff, but the stats underscore how he shouldn't have been the No. 5 hitter, either.

They were about as bad at the plate after firing Davis as they were before. Doesn’t seem like grounds for a victory lap on his part.

This thread did not turn into a complete PG Wodehouse love-fest. Please correct this mistake. Thank you. - Bertie

Tell ya what -- historic package deal! -- I will be PBO and hitting coach for one low price. You can even give me Chili's old uniforms to save money on new lettering.

I hope Walt's boss doesn't read BTF, because Walt is clearly looking for other employment right now.

Maybe I should throw my hat in the ring. I know some people who used to work at Point72 and could probably get my resume in front of Cohen :-)

Haven't the Mets cleaned house multiple times in the past few years?

Pedro Feliciano died. Sh#t.
   20. The Duke Posted: November 08, 2021 at 11:30 AM (#6051878)
Did the Mets interview Pedro too? No one wants that job.
   21. Ron J Posted: November 08, 2021 at 11:55 AM (#6051880)
Nah. Just using the Mets as leverage in the job he really wants.

That's the primary purpose of anybody talking to the Mets.

Walt retired a month ago. Early, thanks very much.

Just using the Mets as leverage in the job he really wants.

Au contraire. I am eager to come out of retirement to take the role for a guaranteed modest sum.

Maybe I should throw my hat in the ring.

Back off buddy!

Man, even Pedro Feliciano is finding a way to turn down the Mets job!
   24. Harmon "Thread Killer" Microbrew Posted: November 08, 2021 at 04:09 PM (#6051928)
I thought we were talking about Jose Feliciano for a second there - wondered why it was news in a Mets thread. Tigers, maybe . . .

Anyhoo, glad to know it was a false alarm and he is still among us cuz "Ya know, Jose Feliciano, you got no complaints."

In unrelated news, Chili Davis announced his retirement as a batting coach.

bbc, you could bring in Barry as manager or hitting coach.
   28. base ball chick Posted: November 10, 2021 at 10:32 AM (#6052226)
i wouldn't mind being with barry (the sunny, happy one), but i don't think he's hitting coach material. with adults, that is. Ive heard good things about how good he is/was with young kids. endless patience. but not with major leaguers who should already KNOW how to hit like he does/did. anyhow, from what i can tell with his year in Fla, he didn't like not being in cal
