Chris Archer, Tampa Bay Rays to reunite with 1-year deal, sources say

Right-hander Chris Archer and the Tampa Bay Rays are in agreement on a one-year, $6.5 million deal, pending a physical, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Tuesday.

With the move, Archer is returning to the organization with which he debuted in 2012 and found his greatest success.

Archer, 32, had been a disappointment since being traded from the Rays, with whom he was a two-time All-Star selection, to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows and Shane Baz in 2018. Archer, who signed a six-year, $25.5 million deal in 2014, went 6-12 with a 4.92 ERA in 33 starts for the Pirates, including a 3-9 mark with a 5.19 ERA in 2019.

I read a story some years ago about Chris Archer and how he grew up, etc.

He seemed like a really good guy, so I truly hope that he gets back to being a competent MLB starter.

I really enjoyed him during his postseason analyst stint during the Cubs WS run... and I wish the Cubs had been in on this, especially at that price.

As I've noted before - I've met him (he's a local), seemed like a very nice guy. I root for him...

Yeah, he's a good guy. A few years back he was the Rays' designated autograph signer at the Sunday afternoon game. My kids have done this many times with Rays players and while the players are always gracious, Archer goes out of his way to engage with the kids. And for a while he traded book recommendations with me on Twitter.

When he started to decline, I was thinking they should make him into a closer. Seemed like he didn't have the endurance to throw as many innings, but his slider was still a nasty wipeout pitch. But now they need starters, so that's where he'll be.

But now they need starters
Well, whatever that will mean for the Rays.

Truth. Maybe they'll make him The Opener 2.0 and get him out there every few days.

Well, even after the Pederson signing, this is too much for what passes for the Cubs these days. They've been sort thru this bounceback/rehab/reclamation bin and have spent as little as possible on guys like Shelby Miller, Kohl Stewart, and Trevor Williams. They've also been looking at/talking to/whatever with Archer, Arrietta, Samardzija, and Foltynewicz but sounds like all of those guys are expecting much more (one rumor said Jake was looking for $8-10mil) than the Cubs want to spend. Their rotation is going to blow.
