Chris Sale to miss start of Boston Red Sox season because of stress fracture in rib cage

Boston Red Sox ace left-hander Chris Sale has a stress fracture in his rib cage and will miss the start of the regular season.

Red Sox general manager Chaim Bloom announced the injury Wednesday, saying it will be “weeks, not days” before Sale can resume throwing.

Sale, who turns 33 on March 30, made nine starts last season, going 5-1 with a 3.16 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 42⅔ innings. The seven-time All-Star missed nearly two years due to an elbow injury that eventually required Tommy John surgery.

Flags fly forever...which is a good thing, because if you don't embrace that mindset, Sale's contract is not going to settle well. He has thrown exactly 190 innings, total in the three years since the 2018 World Series. In those three years, he made $45m, plus the prorates part of 2020's $30 million (about $12m?). The rest of his contract:

22: 30m
23: 27.5m
24: 27.5m
25: 20m vesting option if he finishes in the top 10 in the CYA in 2024, and doesn't end the year on the IL.

If it makes you feel any better Aroldis Chapman has been paid $49.2 million for the same three years and has only managed to pitch 125 innings. Or Kimbral at $42M for 95.2 innings.

Sale can opt out after this year, if that's worth anything. He gets this abbreviated offseason to evaluate the free agent possibilities under the new CBA.
